I just went through this. D7200 does not (I think?) present option to turn VR off/on in the menu with the AF-P DX version, even with the latest firmware update. So choose between no-VR and VR permanently on. Unfortunately 70-300 is a range where VR is very valuable. But as noted, should be disabled for tripod shots. I will add that you mentioned birds, and panning can be an issue for VR as well.
Mind-boggling decision to eliminate the VR switch from the lens barrel. In birding it’s very helpful to be able to switch it quickly, preferably without looking. Cynically perhaps they are pushing us to “upgrade” to D7500.

Only certain models will allow you to turn the VR off. I have a D7200 and found out after buying a P series lens. Asked Nikon support about when there would be a firmware upgrade to enable this feature and was told that they were not aware that there would be one as that is all controlled by the programmers. A little frustrating since the D7200 is listed as being one of the bodies that the P series will work with after firmware upgrades. Lens still works great. Just one of those things that makes me scratch my head at the logic behind it.

I concur with the above. VR stays on ALL the time once the camera is switched on. The D7200 does not have a menu item controlling VR On/Off as is found in later models. When the camera is left switched on the VR electronics will place an extra load on the internal battery leading to battery charge depleting relatively quickly especially if one is using the camera in live view mode for videography.
