Dave, I've been wearing Merrell Moab boots for the last 14 years. I purchase mine at REI. My suggestion would be to go to a shoe store and find out what size you need prior to ordering anything.

Duluth Trading Co. has some good footwear solutions, as well.

👍
Merrell MOAB are the only shoes I wear everyday for work. You can get waterproof and non waterproof versions of most of their shoes. I have several of both. Non waterproof are cooler for summer dry days

I would recommend Vasque. I have had good luck with a couple of pairs of this brand. I would also suggest a small privately owned store rather than a "box store" with assistants who used the different kinds of hiking boots. Fit is most critical regardless of the brand as long as it has a good reputation. Check out the internet. The store that I use has a small platform to simulate hiking conditions. A good pair is not cheap but will last a long time. Based on what you plan to do, Vibram soles and waterproof are important factors in your selection.

BRAND is a lot less critical than proper FIT. Never buy footwear online unless you fully know the brand. Go to any good sporting goods store and try on several in your price range. Improperly fitting shoes/boots can ruin your day or your entire trip!

Great advice, make sure their long enough or you'll lose a toenail.

REI and always try them on and walk around in them in the store for 5-10 minutes and then decide.

I like the Columbia brand. They're lightweight, but sturdy and comfortable. Definitely try them on in a store.

Lowa and Merrell are both great. Zappos.com offers free shipping, both ways if needed and overnight will send a second pair if there is a problem with the first.

They're not cheap, but boots made by Peter Limmer and Sons are without peer. I bought my first pair in 1990, and had them until 2012 when they became overcooked bacon in the back of my car (along with $10K worth of photo and hiking gear). I went back to Intervale NH to have a second pair made, and he even the sheet where he made the original measurements and outline of my foot that he used to make the first pair.

They are expensive, but it only hurts once. You will never experience blisters, foot pain, or any type of break in period. The boot has minimal padding inside, since padding is only used to allow for different feet to fit into generic boots. These things fit PERFECTLY! I have bought these twice, and each time have gone on an extended backpacking trip without breaking them in with no ill effect.

If you haven't tried a custom-made boot - you are in for a treat. Nothing on the market even comes close to quality and fit.

My first pair cost me $250 in 1990. My second pair, which I ordered in 2012 and picked up in 2014, cost me $700, and in all likelihood they will cost more today. But I can recommend them without hesitation. It is the choice of through hikers (end to end) on both the Appalachian and Pacific Crest trails.

Some videos you may see talk about a 2 -3 month break in period. I've never experienced that. Your mileage may vary.

Gene - amazing that you mention them. I bought my first pair back in the 1970s, and they worked flawlessly for me in all my hiking back then. I think I still have them in storage somewhere. Unless you are indeed using every day, or a through hiker on the AT or PC, may be a bit much for most, but I don’t disagree that they are perhaps the best in the word. Did not know that they were still there, 50 years after my last pair.

To the OP, it sounds like fit more than type. Since you need good fitting, and brands do vary quite a bit, for this next pair, I would invest in a local store to try several out. I like Merrills, but my son, with size 14 feet, find Keens work best for his hiking in scouts. Do look a trail walkers (low cut) vs hiking boots. There is a trade-off in stability vs weight. Depends on what you are wanting to do. And, if you do take advantage of the local store expertise (go someplace good, not dicks or walmart), buy from them (since we all, when we take advantage of the local brick and mortar store, NEVER then go buy online - right?). Your next pairs can be the same size/brand off online. Good luck

I am asking for advice on brands of good quality hiking shoes for my photography excursions. The last pair I purchased were great, but too small. I got them on line and that was the problem. I could not try them on first and walk around. Any suggestions will be helpful.

Davet...I’m sure you’ve gotten a lot if good suggestions but I’ll add mine to for your consideration. My wife and I purchased my boots from a local Eastern Mountain Sports store. My first pair I bought 5 yrs ago before visiting Monument Valley and a number of other spots in the southwest and realized they were just a tad too tight...I decided to bite the bullet and buy a new pair because it was my fault they were too tight...I went back to the store intending to buy a new pair...to my amazement they gave full credit for the shoes I’d worn for a few months...and gave me a new pair. We wouldn’t go anywhere else to buy hiking boots and or equipment now. We have been to Africa twice on safaris, Death Valley, CA and points in between wearing them almost daily. The brand name is ‘Vasque’ and are waterproof and give a lot if ankle support and wear very well!

Oboz footwear from REI does it for me. These boots have lasted me the longest. I have Timberland, Keen and Merrill boots and these Oboz boots have lasted the longest and fit the best for me. I like a large toe box and Merrill, especially does not fit well due to the slimmer toe box.

am a long time Danner fan! If you are looking to save on a pair and in the PDX area they have a seconds store out on airport way.

I compared the seconds to a prime pair and saw no difference at all.

been buying boots there for 20 years
good luck

Speaking as an ex-Scoutmaster with over 2,000 miles of backpacking experience I would offer you the advice I always gave my Scouts and adults who hiked with us. First, there is no one brand of hiking boot or shoe that is right for everyone. Just like any piece of clothing or shoes, every brand fits each foot differently. The best way to buy boots is to go to REI. All of the salespeople at REI as a job requirement must be experienced in the field using the products they sell in their assigned departments. The people in the Footwear Department actually hike and backpack themselves and speak from experience. In addition, REI trains them in the proper way to fit boots and shoes. If you are unhappy with your purchase REI unconditionally guarantees the products they sell for life and will refund or exchange products no questions asked.
