I mean do you really plan on wearing THAT!

You sound like my EX husband. There is a way to offer suggestions so as not to be demeaning, unlike your example.

My current husband would NEVER say something like that.

I read somewhere that the latest iPhone cameras use the same 20 megapixel "one inch" Sony sensor that both the Sony RX10 IV and RX100 VI use. Combine that with downloadable camera apps that offer many of the control features of a dslr with a zoom lens, like image stabilization, in addition to the useful automated features of such devices as "Case Air" and the newer "Arsenal" camera remote control, and in the right hands we may have the makings of a formidable photographic instrument. Kinda looks like APS-C in phones may not be all that far away. Merry Christmas! 🙂

Which iPhone has a 1-inch sensor? I had not heard that. I still have an iPhone 7 and wasn’t planning to upgrade until it gets lost or breaks. I still would rarely use the phone for pictures, though.

Perfect sentiment for these troubled times.

There has been a massive development in mobile phone cameras, the latest boasting 3 or even 4 cameras with mega pixel outputs. My question is has it contributed to a significant improvement in photographic output? Is there any evidence that it has or is it just the latest marketing gimmick? Another issue that I find irritating is the vertical letterbox video output when everything else we view is widescreen?

Aggravating....I wish my daughter would send videos taken with a 'real' camera instead of those god-awful vertical letterbox, unusable, iPhone videos she sends me of the Grandkids at soccer, basketball or gymnastics tournaments. I took some videos for her at a gymnastics tournament using my A6500.....no contest compared to her latest iPhone, wasn't even comparable. However Sony's new proposed 48MP sensor might really be able to help the cell phone industry.

I didn't chase the story any further but I'm pretty sure I read that in an article responding to the announcement of the release of the latest iPhone within the past couple of weeks and I didn't make a note about the source since I'm not an Apple fan. Sorry!

Yes, the cameras in this year's crop of phones are more advanced. USING the advances is up to the photographer.

With thousands of engineers contributing to the development of smartphone cameras over the last decade or so, more innovation has happened in that market space than in any other area of photography! The major phone manufacturers know that one of the primary uses of their products is photography. The phone has replaced most peoples' point-and-shoot digital and film cameras, in addition to acting as many of the two million other tools (apps) available.

The vertical video we see all too often is the fault of the photographer holding the phone vertically instead of horizontally. There is no reason a smartphone can't make a horizontal video. Yet the BBC and other networks are starting to offer news feeds in vertical video formats... Stoopeed, if you ask me.

"Improvement" is subjective and dependent on each person's goals and interests. You could ask the same about photo sharing sites where quick snaps outnumber thoughtful compositions and technical excellence - regardless of the camera used.

Most of us won't be around to know if/when gimmick becomes norm.

You're irritated by orientation; Joe is irritated by garish pp; Sam is irritated by all the birds posted to Gallery. On and on it goes on grumpyoldmen.com

I am irritated by how easily irritated irratble people get over small stuff that has zeo effect on their lives or endeavors, then post their irritating commentary on public forums - and for what possible value or benefit other than to outdo other curmudgeons in a 'who's who of grumpy' comptition.

Anyway, cellphone cameras are here to stay, so the luddites had better get over themselves, and try to resist the temptation to show the world just how silly they can be.

I've have not heard of a current cell phone with a 1" sensor. The latest iPhones (Xs and Xs Max) have a 12 Megapixel camera with a very small sensor.

I dislike (hate is too strong) vertical shots that should be horizontal and the awfully narrow aspect ratio of cell phone images.

JUST A NOTE: Microsoft's Movie Maker can rotate videos 90° and, I imagine, so can other video post processing software (apps)
