Try looking at the Olympus TG-5. Relatively small, rugged, waterproof, 25-100 zoom in 35mm terms, and affordable. Also, Panasonic has put out a tough camrera (SF-7?) that might be worth looking at.

TG 5 does not have a view finder only a LCD screen.

I'd get the Sony RX100V. It's successor, the RX100VI loses one f-stop over the RX100V.
The VI has a longer lens, but I'll take the V's 1.8 lens over the VI's 2.8.
Compare the reviews of the two cameras.
(I'm happy with my little RX100III. Carry it easily in my shirtpocket. Great photos.)

I recently bought a Leica D-Lux 7 for the purpose that you mentioned. Light weight fits into my pants or shirt pocket, shoots raw, shoots macro. It has a zoom lens 24-75 full frame equivalent. Much lighter than my 50lb pack with Nikon gear. I have it with me all the time. Attached is a photo very recently taken.

I have a Panasonic DMC ZS-60 as my "purse" camera. It is a little fat for a shirt pocket. However it fits perfectly in a carrier for a GoPro. The case is very small and fits over the shoulder. It has a viewfinder, which was the requirement that my Canon A2500 was missing. Zooms to 30x (while online the system goes to the online manual. not able to find mm eq. at this time). Can shoot in RAW. 18 MP.

Olympus TG-5 works great... waterproof (try it next time you go scuba diving), shockproof, dustproof, freezeproof, and excellent photo quality to boost. Comes with zoom, shoots RAW too.

I carry a Lumix ZS40 in my shirt pockets with a tripod pad attached. I only wear Dickies work shirts which have pretty standard size pockets. It has a 24-720 mm equivalent Leica designed zoom, auto and full manual control, 18 Mpx and a host of other features. It is an older model but still available. The next newer model in the lineup doesn't compare well but the model after that is very good.

I have been using various versions of the Sony RX100 since they came out. I now have version VI, which is my favorite (though I have said that before). The quality is excellent for such a small camera, the autofocus has gotten better with each model, and it now has a viewfinder and a decent zoom. Everybody has their favorites. This is mine. I have used various small Panasonic cameras too, but I just haven't found any other pocket camera that can match the IQ for me that I can get from the RX100s. Whatever you decide on, I would recommend a camera with at least a 1" sensor.

The G15 and G16 are larger cameras with a significantly smaller sensor. What advantages does it have over the RX100***, ZS100, etc. for the OP?

I have a G16 and I don't see that it has any advantage over the RX100xx or ZS100 cameras. It has a slightly longer zoom than the RX100-RX100v, but that's about it. It is a very good camera, though, and the 1/1.7" sensor works well. But it's not shirt pocket sized, though.

If it were me, looking for a small camera, and I wanted a medium length zoom, and I could afford it, I'd go for the RX100VI. Second choice would be the Lumix ZS100. Both have 1" type sensors and a medium zoom. If I didn't require an EVF, I'd get the Canon G7XII.

I like your comment, Greg. Thank you!

BTW: I've had my G10 jump out of my shirt (breast) pocket, when I leaped (leapt?) a small creek (yes, it survived the swim). Never had any smaller camera do that, but...I keep a lanyard fastened to the camera, and around my neck, just in case.

Can't be too careful. The lanyard is a good idea. I have a zippered side pocket in my jacket that keeps my G16 safe.

Ah! A "jacket" pocket. A bit different than a "shirt" pocket. Once I acquired the a6000, and then the RX100III, the G10 sits on the shelf (but I do use it to photograph household inventory, and it's quite a good camera for that purpose). And...if someone wants to borrow a camera, guess which one they get.

The "telephoto lens" on the iPhone X is about 65mm (equivalent). The M6 longest zoom setting is 200mm with optical zoom and about 280mm with digital zoom.
