Curious to know what travel device do you use, to store and edit pictures, when traveling.. on an overseas trip I can easily take 8000 or more photos.. I use a mac 27 desktop at home with LR classic CC.. I used to use a lap top when traveling along with an external drive, but my apple laptop is a 2010 model and is not really functional anymore.. I shoot, primarily, with Canon 5dm4 so I use both SD and CF cards., I know I can buy another laptop and use it with an external travel drive to back up and edit when traveling, but would love something smaller.. like iPad ( so I can read with it , instead of my Kindle,, to help minimize electronics to carry along) but I can’t figure out how to download from both cards and store that many files on an iPad…I tried calling Adobe to help, but they couldn’t answer my questions…So I turn to you all, for any suggestions. It would be most appreciated!..Right now, all I can see is purchasing another lap top, and I really was hoping that was not the only solution… thx

My vacations are different. I do not schlep a bunch of stuff around with me nor do I spend time editing pictures at night. I go on vacation to have fun see and do different things. I have a D610 I take a lens. I cannot imagine taking 8,000 pictures on.....vacation.

I take my camera; iPhone, iPad and the Apple “dongle” with ten 128 gig SD memory cards with me on all trips.—a separate card for each day.

I upload a days’ shots at the end of each day through the dongle onto either the iPhone or iPad.,They all get uploaded into Photos. They then go into iCloud and then to both devices.
I then remove the SD card from the dongle and store it into slot #1 in my card carry case preserving the images on the SD card till I get home.,i put the next card into the camera and use it on day #2, etc. repeating the same process each day.

Apple’s Photos app has gotten sufficirntly advanced to do basic editing. For more advanced editing, I use LR CC on the iPad or if necessary on the iPhone simply by importing rhe images from Photos’ camera roll for further editing via LRCC which easily sees Photos camera roll.

So, by the time I get back home, all my images are in 3 places: the SD cards, icloud and the “keepers” are in LRCC.

I find that as I develop better photography skills I don’t take as many shots as I used to so upload times are shorter as WIFI gets faster.

My iPhone is always in my pocket, my IPad stays in rhe hotel room safe.

Depends on my desire for the trip.
Generally I don't waste time editing etc. while enjoying a trip unless there is a business component to it.
I take a laptop, download and use my PSE.
If the trip is pleasure I do not take a laptop, keep photos on the CF cards and download when I get home.
Sort of like when I used film.
I prefer to enjoy my travels, spend time socializing and not hunched over a computer.
For photos to share immediately my wife likes to do this so a cell phone works just fine.

Thank you for your quick replys! So, with 8000 photos, can you store them all on an iPad???..I am told that LR CC can transfer to Classis CC when I return..but wasn't sure how it works, and what edits hold in the process

Last trip I did was a 16 day transatlantic. I used my iPad Pro with LRCc mobile. You download to your iPad. When connected to WiFi your photos go to the cloud. You have to link LR Classic CC and LR CC. What ever changes you make will be mirror in both. When you get home simply fire up your iMac and LR Classic and wait a few minutes and everything will be downloaded to your iMac.

I may do quick edits, but this is more for seeing the shots and maybe emailing while on my trip. Go and enjoy the trip, experience the places and burn that into your memory.

I can launch a file copy session and monitor the progress using a smartphone, tablet or laptop. It has a 6000mAh battery which when fully charged can charge a phone 3 times. Best $40 I ever spent, and it is by far the most reliable smallest, lightest scalable backup solution I have yet to come across. And the cheapest.

I don't have a solution for your CF cards, but from reading this:

https://www.ravpower.com/p/ravpower-5200mah-filehub-plus.html

There may be a solution in there if you can attach a USB hub and a card reader to the input side. I don't think this is possible with the WD-03.

This ravpower device looks like a top notch solution, both for photos and otherwise. Thank you for sharing this idea.

I use two pocket camera's in separate belt pouches to keep hands free when I am on vacation. A Sony HX90V (90% of the time) has a pop up view finder and a Zeiss 24-750 mm lens with a flip up rear screen. I also carry my old trusty Sony RX1002 for all my standard stuff. I have blown to 20X30 with both camera's with no effort. The belt pouches are a must, I carry them to my front side with no issues, really frees you up a lot.
Image below was taken of a small town along the Rhine from the top deck of the ship, the second image is a light house along the Maine shore. Sony HX90V

On our last trip to Norway, I uploaded each day's photos to my iPad mini and photos were automatically stored in my iCloud account.

Yes, you can connect the two Lightrooms like you suggest. It is a new enough workflow that not many, including me, get it yet.

B&H hosted a session explaining it. Try watching this: https://livestream.com/bheventspace/events/8478684

I shoot RAW.. one of the other members sent a link to a B&H video that demonstrates how LR CC will connect and download thru the cloud to LR Classic, and store small files on the iPad ...that might be my solution.. thanks!.. your response was right along the same line...

The problem with an iPad is how much memory do you have to dedicate to images vs apps/books....and do you shoot JPG or raw? Raw's will eat up memory fast for sure....

I would think that you would want something like a WD Passport wireless device that can store your images and allow a tablet to access them, so you are not wasting space in your iPad's memory for images.

BTW - With Lightroom CC (Mobile) your images can be kept in the cloud (Meaning you need access to the internet to get them to the cloud)

Might be the perfect thing... card reader built in, can connect to devices over built in WIFI to allow access to images stored on the device... no memory issues for the iPad & lots of room for raw or JPG images....

I take a full frame camera, 2 lenses a 17-40 and a 28-300, my Apple laptop and a 1.5TB small card drive and a card down loader. I put the pictures on my laptop and my external drive. I can work on my pictures when I have time and have a back up.

My ipad workflow for travel:

My home photo workstation is a desktop computer, Lightroom Classic, and external drives that hold my raw files. My travel workstation is an ipad pro with LightroomCC and a little Apple SD cardreader. I shoot raw only.

While traveling I download raw files into Photos, after which I can open them in LRCC. I don't do a lot of editing while traveling except for those I wanted to post or email right away (and how I entertain myself on the long flights home). I do a LOT of culling. The raw files then upload via hotel wifi to my Adobe cloud that's included with my subscription. My "free" Adobe cloud is able to hold 10-12 days worth of images before running out of room, and that's usually the length of time I travel. If I run out of "free" cloud space I just keep the others on the SD cards and ipad till I get home. I always want to be sure I have photo files in at least two places. I have only run out once, when I was in Cuba where there was no wifi to speak of, and nothing could get to the cloud.

When I get home and turn on the computer and the ipad, all my pictures automatically copy themselves onto the external drive I've preselected, and add themselves into LR Classic on my computer with the edits I'd done on the road (You do have to set up a choice as to where you want them to go). Once I make sure all the first batch is copied, safely added to LRClassic and backed up in my regular backup system, I delete them from my Adobe Cloud and this allows the others that are sitting on the ipad "waiting for space" to upload into Adobe cloud and then into my desktop LR Classic. By the time I get the laundry started everything is situated in my desktop with normal backup. Next step is deleting those images from Adobe Cloud, from Photos, and from the ipad to free up room for next time. Once I'm convinced everything is where it should be and backed up, I reformat the SD cards.

I am sure there are more sophisticated workflows, but this simple one works for me without forcing me to buy extra cloud space.

Your work flow sounds exactly as I envision mine to be ( it’s what I did when traveling with my now defunct laptop and external drive).. question.. when the images come back into LR classic, can you designate them to be ordered by “date shot”.. for me that helps with organizing long trips.. and how many gigs is on your iPad to store the files.. thx!

Just got home from a month's travel in Europe and here is my workflow for managing the photos I accumulated (about 9000 RAW). My home desktop is similar to yours, 27 inch iMac with mirrored external drives also backed up to the cloud (Backblaze). I have the smaller MacBook Pro Retina as a travel computer. A 500Gb SSD onboard. Not a lot of data stored on this machine and I clean out all unnecessary files & photos before I depart. Each day I download the photos on the SD card from the camera and my iPhone (used for geotagging) to Lightroom CC Classic which is running on the MacBook. If I have time, I can do some culling, processing etc. I carry enough SD cards so these are my travelling "backup".

When I return home, I export and merge the Lightroom library from the travel MacBook with the master library on my iMac Desktop. This way I preserve all of the edits that I did on the road. I can now finish off the culling and processing of the photos from the trip.

After my backup systems on the desktop have run and been verified, I can format the SD cards and trash the photos on the MacBook and am ready for my next trip.

If you use a small external HD you can load them by date and then by the subject. A 1 or 1.5TB drive is more space then you will ever need.
