Source for printing, and type of paper to use.

My son and grandson. I would like to have a couple of prints made and would appreciate advice on a source that can respect the square formatting and provide whatever type of paper you recommend. I'm guessing that I would like to see the print on a matte finish "art" paper that reinforces the soft warm feel of the portrait.

Any other advice will be appreciated.

Costco and Sams Club seem to be fine local choices.

I just want to make sure you understand what's going on with the picture you posted. The picture has a distinct orange color cast. I'm telling you this not to offend you but to let you know your monitor may not be color calibrated. If your monitor is not color calibrated and you don't see the cast and your print this picture your going to be very disappointed. It won't be the printer companies issue. Everyone sees color differently and monitors that are not calibrated can make a picture look well balanced when it is not. I mean no offense by this but I just wanted you to know so your not dissappointed with the results and waste your money.

Maybe someone else will chime in with a color calibrated monitor.

I agree with you Russ, it showed a distinct orange tint on my monitor as well. Your advice is spot on and I hope the gentleman accepts it fot what it is.

This is by no means the best fix that's possible but just meant to show what a slight change of white balance will do.

I am very well aware of what you refer to as the color cast. To me it looks "warm" and the "corrected image" looks cold and conveys none of the emotion I intended between father and son. Since this is an esthetic choice and I actually want to duplicate it in the final image, my questions stand:
Where can I do that, and what kind of paper should I have used.

Yes, that was good of you to mention the orange cast. And the fix was nicely done also. If it were me, I would be happy that it was pointed out to me. It would be a shame to see a photo that will most likely be around for generations not be done the justice it deserves. Just my 2 cents worth. Boone

I appreciate the advice, and I recognize that I am in a minority here. I even am considering on cutting back on the "coloration". But I must say I intentionally added warmth to the shot and like it that way. And I would still like some suggestions on where I can have it printed. So far I have been pointed to resources that use conventional papers, and I would like to see this photo on a soft matte finish.

Yes, you are right. Do the image as you see it through your eyes. To give you a place to check out, go to MPIX at this URL: http://www.mpix.com/products/prints/ I have done several shots with this Lab. A lot of the people on the HOG use this Lab also. I found them through a very talelented man and he suggested their "Matalic Paper", with the "Lustre Coating". I have had a couple 30" X 20" made this way, and they really "POP". This is a big time Lab. I paid around $35.00 ea. for these and was thrilled with their work. I hope this is what you were looking for. Your Grandson looks like his dad, I am sure you are proud of them!! Good Luck, hope this helps. Boone

Thank you very much Boone. My grandson and son look so much alike that it is often difficult to distinguish their photos taken at comparable ages. My daughter-in-law, is hoping that our 17 month old grand daughter will show some indications that she was involved in the process.

One of the things I enjoy most about photography is that once past the basics, which most people agree about, one enters a purely subjective esthetic area.

There is a current exhibit at the Museum of Art in New York City about present and past photo-manipulation. A young woman, with an art school degree, who does considerable work for Ad agencies, gave a lecture and mentioned that she never adjusts skin for white balance or color cast but creates a tone that pleases her eyes and fits the mood of the ad. I'm no where in her league, nor do I believe her approach works for everyone, but is is interesting.

OK I appologize for the colour correction that you never did ask for. Just me and my colour preference, but totally understand you liking it the way it is . As I don't live in USA sorry can't help with the printing and paper question.
