I just looked him up, and his work is amazing, but do you think he's a bit too famous to be bothered with my issue? Is there a trick to reaching him as a Sony shooter?

I have a Sony A7III and ran into a different but similar problem. The camera would not turn on. I had to remove the battery and pu it back in -then the casmera functioned normally. My son. a Canon user, replaced the lens and all worked properly. The lens I had on was a E mount but for APSC. Putting on the proper E Mount or FE lens on has "solved" the problem. Weird!

Brian is never too famous to be bothered with mine/your issues. He is a down to earth guy and will get back within 24 hours. He breads, eats, lives and loves photography and best of all helping others learn the craft!

The only sound the a7rIII body makes besides shutter noises, is the sensor vibrating when it the 'sensor cleaning mode'. It is about a 3 second event when activated and could be interpreted as a growling sound. After using the cleaning mode, the body must be turned off and then back on for it to function so this again sounds like what you are experiencing. My guess is you are somehow activating the cleaning mode not realizing it although not quite sure how this could happen since it requires you to go into the 'menu', then to 'functions', then to 'cleaning mode'........ The 3rd multifunction button is right next to the 'menu' button and perhaps when trying to press #3, you are hitting the menu button multiple times, eh? The symptoms you describe point in this direction..
The only sound the a7rIII body makes besides shutt... (show quote)

Never, ever had that issue with my A7RIII or any Sony A7Series camera. Maybe the sensor cleaning mode activating. But IMHO send it in under warranty and let them diagnose and correct any issue. FYI my Sony gear has been every bit as reliable and sturdy in heavy use as any of my previous Nikon and Canon gear, so I don't think that is the issue in general. Every camera brand can have a problem once in awhile, just the law of averages. Keep us informed please, thanks.

Call Sony directly. Tell them what is happening and get their recommendation for proceeding, remember it is still under warranty.

Thanks everyone for your help, I really appreciate it! To my surprise Brian Smith actually responded to my email within a few hours, which I think is amazing. Unfortunately, however, he had never heard of the problem, and thought it could be a third party battery issue, but I'm only using the Sony battery that came with the camera. So, my next step is to call Sony for direction on what to do next.

Thanks Heather. I was able to reach him and he was very responsive. Looks a firmware update may have done the trick. Thanks for your help!
