My friend purchased a Sony HX 400V "super zoom" and my wife really liked it so I thought I'd get it as a Christmas replacement for her ancient Fuji point 'n shoot. I checked past UHH posts and it seems some people recommended the Nikon P900 and Canon SX-60 as their preferred product over the Sony. Several recommenced the HX 400V, too.

Between B & H's nice package deal for $398 (cost is an issue, here) and the Sony's Zeiss lens & 20 megapixel sensor, I'm pretty well settled on that camera...unless some users have had trouble with it. How about it? How many members out there are happy or unhappy with this camera? If there are some compelling negative answers, I'd go a little more money for a different product.

Thanks, folks.

If your wife likes the Sony, my suggestion would be to get it for her. It doesn't really matter what any of us here think...certainly not more than what she thinks.

Stick with the Sony, it has a higher resolution sensor than Canon and Nikon.

Given the three options you gave, my choice would be the Sony. I own the Canon SX60. If memory serves, there are at least a couple of UHH members who purchased and then returned the Nikon because they were dissapointed. That’s my nickel’s worth.

If she liked the Sony, get the Sony. Psychology is more imprtant than peformance. If you get anything other than the Sony she will think you got it for yourself - not her.

I have had a Nikon P900 and also the P1000. My issue with the P900 is that at 73 I tend to shake so when I had the camera set for the longest reach, my images were blurry. I could have corrected that with a tripod, but I just don't like carrying around one of those. The issue I had with the P1000 us also blurry images for the same reason, but it is also very heavy. I have a Sony RX10 III and RX10 IV. They are perfect for me. I shoot lots of low light venues, hockey games and stage plays. I am still looking for something with a longer reach. I live on the Chesapeake Bay and like shooting ships passing by. Good luck. You really can't go wrong with a Sony. I sold all my Canon equipment to buy the Sony, the one downfall is the price, but its the only camera you will need.

Speaking strictly as a “wife”, get her the Sony. It’s what she wants.

I used to own that camera and did a trip to Alaska along with another Sony point and shoot. Loved the zoom range on that sucker WOW. One day I went out in a drizzle and the camera stopped working. But, 6 months later and with the dry summer heat, guess what, it was working fine again. SO, the camera is nice, Zeiss lens, great zoom range. BUT, KEEP IT DRY.

I’m finding it difficult to fathom why you’d be considering anything other than the Sony she likes. Wanting to live dangerously, do you? Any other choice better come with you prepared with a bunch of “I know you liked the Sony, but....” Then again, if you’re looking at these other cameras because it’s fun to compare, I’m all for it. 😎😏

If you buy the Sony, be sure and get extra warranty with 3-4 year coverage to cover camera replacement with the dreaded E:62:10 error occurs. The HX300 and HX400 have a design flaw and this error will most certainly occur in time. I've had 4 of these cameras and it happened to all of them. When it does, the camera loses the ability to image stabilize properly and will be slow to start. I've had 4 of these cameras, all covered with 4 year extended warranties. Thankfully they were all replaced at no cost to me. It is an awesome camera...just has a defect. However, it gave me some of the best images for a camera in it's class. The Zeiss lens is super. Check out these images I got from my HX300 before I switched to the RX10M3. My wife uses the HX400 but like it said...it has a 4 year extended warranty. Good luck with your search.

Have you investigated the built-in menu feature that Sony calls "Clear Image Zoom," (CIZ)? CIZ effectively doubles the reach of your RX100 lens zoom to 1200mm by in-camera "upsizing" your images as they are shot, causing very minimal loss of image quality. If you want to double the reach you already have, you might want to try it. If you've already tried it and found it to be unsatisfactory, then nevermind.

Look at it the other way around. If you really liked the Sony and she bought you something else - how would you feel?
