Very nice old structures....they still look good today.

In contrast, to that Castle Marty, Appleby Castle just along the road is in perfect nick..luck of the draw I suppose. Thanks for looking.

[quote=Jolly Roger]A good set Doddy.
Did you buy some Mint Cake?[/

As you can imagine, there were quite a few shops selling "Romney's Kendal mint cake", and I did look at a big display of them in the large indoor market there, but as I wasn't planning to climb mountains (then or in the future) I didn't buy some. Thanks for looking and comment Roger.

Last week my wife and I travelled to the town of Kendal for a look round its shops. on the way back we stopped at the Village of Brough (Bruff) to look round its Castle, its a ruin now, but it is a very interesting site.

Nicely captured, Earl, and love the history.

Thanks for nice comment SpyderJan. It must have been some explosion to blow out those huge lumps of masonry. There is another castle (Appleby) a few short miles down the road that is in its original condition with its magnificent Keep, and is still lived in.

Thanks for the heads up on the Appleby castle, I went to their website, and it is quite amazing.

Your Welcome Jan. There are another two ruined castles not far along the (A66) road, Brougham Castle and Penrith Castle two miles further along, and then about fifteen miles away is The very large Carlisle (Carlile) Castle which is built on the site of an earlier Roman Fort, which helped guard the Roman empires best-preserved boundary defence.. Hadrian's wall, which snakes right across Northern England.

There are still a few places in America where there are remnants of battlements, but those are rare. Most are on the East Coast where early settlements built them to defend the coast from privateers.
