Have you ever wondered about your camera's crop modes? If you have, you're not alone! It seems not a week goes by where I don't have at least a few people asking about using in-camera crop modes, so I thought it was high time I put my fingers to the keyboard and gave you the lowdown.
In the article linked below, we'll tackle things like image quality of an in-camera crop vs. cropping back home, four killer benefits to using crop modes in the field, the downsides, and - if you're a Nikon shooter - we'll look at step by step setup tricks I know you'll like.

Thanks, very interesting and usable!
I've tried the in-camera crop modes and decided they weren't for me. I'd rather crop in post later if need be.
I don't think the X100F uses crop modes, it still maintains 24 MP's in its 40MM and 70MM camera zoom, at least that's what the documentation says.
Thanks. After reading the article, the advantages of in-cropping don’t apply to me. Once I learn more, it might.

Thanks Steve, good stuff to know there. chase
It's good to know that it's exactly what I thought it was. Just a smaller file in the center of the frame.
Thanks so much Steve. I saw that feature in my D7500. I have played with it a bit. And have set my F2 button to access the feature quickly. Not sure exactly how often I will use it, but I find the feature (and the information in your article) very interesting....
Thank you Steve, I posted a comment regarding aspect ratio and the need to crop as none of the aspect ratio match a 11X8.5 print size.

Many print sizes are different aspect ratios, that's why I always crop in post processing for what I'm printing if it is not 3:2.
Thanks for the kind words everyone :)

It's odd that they don't offer that as a crop mode, it's a pretty common size. I did add aspect ratio to the article as one of the reasons to use crop modes - thanks!
Thank you so much for posting this info. When I first acquired my Nikon D610 two years ago, I reprogrammed the Preview button to activate crop mode and use the sub-command dial to switch back and forth between full frame and cropped frame. This comes in handy for when you cannot get close enough to wildlife, etc. . .
I have always shot DX so my question is if a DX lens is used on an FX body does the FX camera go into crop mode or does it need to be programmed?
