I got a used D800 as a second camera and really like it ---it is similar to the D810, but has a low pass filter, so it's supposedly not producing as sharp images as the D810--but it doesn't have the moire pattern problem with the D810, etc. ---I think you'll be pleased with the D810 ---my primary camera is a D750, which is also a very outstanding camera, too!!

Since no one has explored video use why not consider the Nikon DF. George

Peter,
You don't mention in your post what your typical use for the camera will be. I bought a D810 about a year ago shortly after the D850 was introduced. It's a great camera with a solid feel. I use it mainly for landscapes, cityscapes, and portraits. However, I admit to some small pangs of regret for not biting the bullet and buying the D850. Among other things, I think I would really like and use its built-in stacking feature. If your primary goal is birds in flight, sports or other fast moving subjects, the D810 may not be the best choice. When I go after flying birds I always pick up my D500. I am left wondering (with no clear answer) if I had purchased the D850 first, would I have felt the need to buy a D500 (which, by the way, is an awesome camera)?

I am considering purchasing a D810. If you own one would very much like to hear your comments. The D850 is above my price range and I am
a bit hesitant to get into the Z6 model, it is just too new.

I use the 810 and 750. I find myself using the 750 more because most of my shooting does not require files that run over 70mb. The 36 mb sensor produces files that are typically 69 to 74 mb and they take a long time to download and use a lot of computer memory. I like the file size the 750 produces. If I know there is a chance I may have to do some extensive cropping of the shots I'm taking, I will use the 810. I have not seen enough evidence of the 850 producing such superior images over the 810 to make me want to jump ship. I played around with the Z7 at the photo show in NY and was impressed with both it and the Z6. The colors seem to be captured very exactly and as with all mirrorless systems I like being able to see exactly what the change in aperture does in real time. Also there is no blackout when the shutter button is pressed and you can see the exact shot you are taking. I think I liked the Z6 a little more than the Z7 for the reasons stated above. Also the 6 is faster 12 fps vs. 9 fps. for the 7. As someone mentioned they might not go with the Z series since it was so new, but as impressed as I was with the new cameras, I feel that by the time one more generation of this camera comes out, the Z6 (it's replacement whatever number they assign it), will be my next body. Nikon came out with a mirrorless system before and so under impressed that I think it tainted peoples perception of what Nikon was coming out with in the Z series. While I won't say they hit a home run, it was at least a triple and much better than people expected.
Best of luck with selecting your new camera!

I have owned a D810 for 18 months and am very pleased with it. I do mostly action nature shots. It works well with higher iso and low like

I see no need to trade up to a D850.

This last year I won 9 international awards

And have been published

Have had the 810 since it was born so to speak. Love it, there will always be newer and newer models, thats how Nikon stay in business of course, but if this is the last camera you purchase I am sure you will be delighted with it.

Peter Braun..... I have both a D810 and a D750. The D850 has a few more bells and whistles than the D810 including focus stacking. I think it comes down to your personal preference. Good glass imho is very important. Good luck with your decision.

Owned the D810 and sold it on eBay (for way too cheap) and bought D850's. I like the D850 better. Just like the images better for some reason. The flash quit working on the D850 or it was intermittent. Don't need an on board flash anyway for what I shoot. If you can stretch your bucks out go for the D850. If not, you can probably find a D810 on eBay for a good price. just check how many actuations it has.

The D850 has no flash. You mean the D810 flash quit??

I've had a D810 for 2 years and it gets lots of use here at Air Force Village. I also bought the zoom lens (24-120 mm - 4G VR Kit) packaged with it which is no small shakes by itself. Needless to say I am very pleased with the combination. I had two primes, 50 and 85 mm, that work very well. I haven't blown up anything the size of a house yet but 16 x 20 came out beautifully. I shoot mostly portraiture and am the volunteer photog for the Village of 240 residents.

I bought a Nikon refurbished a year and a half ago from Adorama for $2,300. With four professional Nikon lenses I already had this camera has performed quite brilliantly, and offers more features and nuances than I'll ever master or need. I'm glad I bought it, and I'm pretty sure that the nine megapixel difference between it and a D850 would likely not be discernible and certainly not worth a thousand dollars more.
