I would use the 18-140mm kit lens that came with the D7200.

No wider (shorter) than 35mm actual focal length. A 24-70mm or 28-75mm on DX Nikons is about right for most team and individual work. Those are common choices in the school and sports portrait industry.

I like to use 35mm minimum for groups and about 55mm for individuals photographed on DX/APS-C.

24-70

Thanks for all the replies. I'm looking at approx. 26 kids and 5 coaches. Two rows.
I have the 18-140 but don't know if its sharp enough.

Opinions for best lens to take baseball team group photos.

Thanks

I do team photos regularly for a marathon training team. Usually have around 35-40 people in the group. I find my best shots are at 70mm on an APS-C camera at f-5.6 in good sun. I am set up between 40-60 feet away depending on the setting. Though I have, in weaker light, shot at 60 feet f-2.8 and still had plenty of DOF when focused on the front row. If I had to do the same at 40 or 50 feet I would probably focus on the second row.

Shooting from closer on a large group with a wider angle lens can severely limit DOF and distort those on the sides of the group.

My equipment is a Canon 80D with a 70-200 2.8 L.
