Help needed with new D850

With my D810 and 105mm micro nikkor AF-D, I knew how to use the mirror up shooting option: I just selected in on the dial on the upper left of the camera, and shot; one depression of my mc-30 cable release put the mirror up, and another a couple of seconds later released the shutter.

I recently moved up to a D850, and a new 105mm micro nikkor AF-S lens. Now, when I select the mirror up shooting option as before, the camera shoots with one depression of my mc-30 cable release. I'm pretty clear I'm doing something wrong, but I just cannot figure out what it is.

Thanks in advance for any clarification.

Manual the rescue.

Also... Different camera, why do you expect your cable release works the same way?

Not quite the answer your looking for, but related: I usually use the Exposure Delay Mode (Menu d5) rather than a remote release. Less kit to remember to carry and no tooling around fitting up a wired connection. I setup the access to the Exposure Delay Mode in My Menu so its easy to find, set and turn off when finished,

Having said that, I'll set up my D850 with my remote and test, don't want to be caught out in the field with something not working as expected. Will get back here when done.

Does it work as expected if you press the shutter button directly rather than using the mc-30 cable release?

Hi,
I've been a Nikon user for many, many years and never noticed the Exposure Delay Mode in the menu system. Little tips like this is why I come to UHH every morning to read, learn, enjoy my coffee, and get the day started. Thank you! Take care & ...

I don't have a cable, but tested with a radio remote plugged into the Ten-Pin Remote Terminal on the front of the D850. The Mirror Up function worked as expected. Press remote button = Mirror flips up. Press button again = Shutter activates.
Whether to use Mirror Up or Exposure Delay (menu D5) is a matter of choice. Each has its pros & cons. It may not matter for low-light static subjects. With other subjects, you may want to raise the mirror, then wait for the exact time to fire the shutter. Mirror Up lets you control exactly when to shoot. This could be much longer than Exposure Delay's 3-second maximum.

This works on my Canon 5D MK IV, but no reason it won’t work on your Nikon. I’m assuming you are on a tripod. Use live view, touch focus, set a 2 second or other delay of your choice, press the shutter button.

With Mc 30 or remote wireless release first press puts mirror up, second fires shutter on my D850. I'm not sure how you are getting the shutter to fire with one press in mirror up mode? It operates the same as my D810. If you keep the mirror locked up for an extended period of time it will then fire the shutter and the mirror will drop, without pressing the shutter button a second time. Maybe that is what your referring to?

Select Quite Exposure Mode and then go to Custom Settings Menu, Shooting Display then set Exposure Delay Mode up to 3 Sec. One press of button lifts mirror and takes the shot in 3 seconds. In MUP my D850 requires a second press of butten and then does the exposure after 3 seconds. I have programmed Fn1 button to adjust exposure delay.

Thanks to all who responded. It's a little embarrassing, but the thing works now just like you folks said it would, and like I expected it to. All I did (I think) was change lenses, go from MUp to CH with 5 exposure bracketing, change to Mup again, and it worked! Then, went back to original (macro) lens, and it works again. I'm suspecting that somehow when I'd set up Focus Shift mode, something got stuck, and then changing modes, and maybe changing lenses, going back to Mup worked. Whatever the cause, I seem to be good to go now. Thanks again for all of your help.

This way to stabilize is great unless you wish to use bulb mode in which case a release is necessary.. my cable releases has transferred from the D700 thru the D850. It is the same one.

You don’t need to be in Quiet Mode. When an Exposure Delay period is set, pressing the shutter release raises the mirror, and the shutter opens after the set delay time.

Also, if set in MUP, the camera will fire the shutter in 20 seconds (or is it 30s?) after the shutter release is pressed if the operator doesn’t press release a second time. We all know that Electronic Front Curtain is only accessible when using MUP, so this tip is handy if you don’t have a remote release with you but want to use the EFC. I often shoot wide field Astro using this default behaviour in MUP (no remote to mess around with, yes!!!)

But I know I’m off-topic now, apologies. To the OP, I can’t find my remote to test on my D850, so I’m about to organise a search party!
