I'm new to macro photography and am so glad to find this group as I 'm struggling with focus. Here are a couple of recents attempts.

You are doing just fine. You are prioritizing focusing on the eyes and nearby feet. That is normally as it should be.
The lighting is also good. The lighting is well diffused. With a flash you will want to add a diffuser.
