Why won't it fit a D300s? Isn't it an F mount? If it fits a D750 shouldn't it fit any Nikon camera?

That's a great lens but it's Pre-AI..
Nikon says pre-AI lenses cannot be used with the D750 or D300.
They will work with the DF, as you can flip the aperture feeler out of the way so the lens will mount.
Neither the 750 or the 300 have this feature.
The Nikonian website chart and Ken Rockwell's chart also say it will not work with either the D300 or the D750.

It may be possible to convert it to AI (Auto Indexing) so it will mount.
Back when Nikon changed the metering connection, I had all my older lenses converted to AI.
There are DIY instructions on the ‘net and some services that will do it.
