I always recommend tripadvisor.com. Just type in Clayton Georgia where it says "where to" then click on "things to do". It will then list you many things to see and do near Clayton Georgia. This is the first site I go to when I am traveling, it gives me many places I may not have considered before. Try it, you'll like it.

Be sure to take the scenic drive along the “chain of lakes”. That’s Lakes Rabun, Burton, and Seed. Beautiful. Especially in the fall. Water and mountains.

The old section of downtown is nice. Rabun Bald, a mountain nearby has a very rocky top plus trees but the rock portions can give nice vistas for viewing. The entire area is beautiful! Not far at all to the north is the NC border and Cherokee, Enjoy.

Go a little bit further north to Old Cove Road Cataloochee NC to photograph the elk herd. Was there Monday watching a herd bull protect his harem and bugling up a storm.

There are tons of photo ops in those mountains. Particularly now that colors are starting to change. You will enjoy yourself I am sure. You might want to find a place to stay ASAP because it can get crowded up there this time of year. About an hour or so east of Clayton is Brasstown Bald. It is the highest elevation in Georgia and the view can be awesome. I was up there a few weeks back and it is not a waste of time. Here is a shot I took with my little Sony HX90V.

This is a quick phone shot between Highlands and Sky Valley yesterday. I haven't taken the photos off my cameras yet. The leaves are starting to change fast now.

Waterfalls, Waterfals, Waterfalls. Chatooga River at State Line and US 76. Tallullah River northwest rabun county (Google Tate City). Eat at Fortify Pi (Pizza), sandwiches at the Universal Joint (used to be a gas station), breakfast at the Clayton Cafe. Rent a boat and go out on Lake Burton. See Highlands, NC. All you can eat, southern style, at the Dillard House. BBQ at Oinkers, south on 441.

Go up into the mountains, you will find something. LOL. I used to spend every summer up in Highlands as a kid, but that was a long time ago, there are some pretty interesting places up there, a few waterfalls and such not to mention parks and trails. I am sure that someone will come along and give you some great advice, there is a big waterfall and state park south of Clayton in the Rayburn Gap, Taulliah falls. You also have the Cullasaja River Gorge that runs between Franklin and Highlands.

Just east of Clayton is War Woman Dell with great views of Chatoga River and several waterfalls in the area.

If you go to Lake Seed make sure you take the hike to Minihaha (sp?) waterfall, one of the prettiest around. Easy hike but can be hard to find.

Wildcat Creek Road takes you along beautiful Wild Cat Creek. Road is dirt but well worth the drive.

Enjoy.

You might consider riding down to Athens on Saturday evening (the 27th) for the Wild Rumpus Parade...sort of a mini Mardis Gras Halloween parade. Great photo ops.

I live not too far from Clayton, and I have been hiking in the area quite a few times. Specific places you should consider include

1. Tallulah Gorge State Park a bit south of Clayton. Many waterfalls in the gorge although it is 585 steps down and then back up to get there. Also leftover towers from when the Wallendas tightroped across the gorge.
2. Black Rock Mountain State Park just north of town. Should be wonderful color there by now.
3. the Foxfire museum and store just north of town.
4. Minnehaha Falls on the west side of Lake Rabun. About 1/3 mile hike from the road. Maybe a 45 minute drive from Clayton. You'll pass the Lake Rabun campground on the way, and the trail to Panther and Angel Falls starts there.
5. Warwoman Dell east of town out Warwoman road. A nice little waterfall there and access to the Bartram Trail.
6. For a longer walk, the trail to Panther Creek Falls is south down Hwy 441 a ways. 3.5 mile hike each way or 7 miles round trip.

I could go on, but these are the best of the bunch IMHO.

Cheers,
Dick
