Everyone has given you great advise about books on photography technique, especially with the Bryan Peterson books. But don't forget, you still need to read your owners manual for the camera and become familiar with what settings the camera has and how to adjust them. Canon typically does not include this as a hard copy book in the box, but as a PDF file on the software CD that came with the camera.

Ask plenty of questions here at UHH. Plenty of very experienced people here willing to help.

I'm with Bryan Peterson's books. I've read "Understanding Exposure", "Understanding Flash Photography" and now reading a third B.P. "Learning to See Creatively". B.P. explains everything very well and uses side by side comparisons to demonstrate his discussions. These books along with the great folks here have greatly improved my photos and I even believe I can really get great images. Still working on it too!
P.S. I have also watched his videos from Adorama, I think he his a fantastic teacher of things photographic.
