Going to my nephew's USMC graduation next week and will have a day to tour and shoot before the festivities. Any must see/must do's??

If by chance you go to La Jolla, you MUST, MUST stop at Brockton's Villa over looking the ocean and have 'Coast Toast', it'll bring you back and you'll want the recipe. Besides where else can get the sweet aroma of Sea lions while dining....

Coronado Island is the first place we go and stay -- be sure to check out the Del (Hotel del Coronado) for drinks or lunch on the patio.

I've lived in SD for 50+ years and never heard of the "59 Mile Drive"; I shall give it a try! The Drive notwithstanding, for a 1-3 day overview of the area's Spanish Colonial and military history, I suggest: The MCRD Museum + Liberty Station Museum, Cabrillo National Monument (and its tide pools), The Midway, and Balboa Park. What you do NOT need to visit are Old Town, downtown and Tijuana. (Please tell him, for me, "Thanks for your service!")

Make sure you tour the base and take shots of the monuments also close by is Balboa Park and San Diego zoo but if your hotel is near the base you will see plenty of aircraft fly overhead, at evening time you can get great shots of low flying aircraft ! Stay away from Mexico not worth it ! Have fun if you get the monuments please let me know!

A trip out to Point Loma will give you a great spot for long range images of the city. The lighthouse on Point Loma is quite photogenic as well.

In addition to La Jolla, pronounced La HOYah, I always take time to visit Coroado. It is houses a large US Navy (pardon) Bade and is very picturesque. The signature photo op is the Hotel Del Coronado with the orange shingled roof and white walls. It is great to visit, Brunch is epic. The restaurnats and shops in Coronado are excellent and teh walking is easy. Great beaches, too.

The Bay has Ferry rides, including to Coronado, and photos from the water point of view are unique for the casual tourist. I second or 5th the Midway tour. It is a great reminder of our Naval Aviation Heritage and many aircraft are on display. The presentations with holograms of the heroes of the Battle of Midway, the immediate turning point of WwII Pacific theater (although Part 2 took 5 years to complete). There are many former crewmen and Officers who serve as docents. An overall great trip.

Congrats to the graduating Marine.

Old Town is fantastic for photography, you can get some great "street" shots there. USS Midway is really cool as well. I would also recommend to follow the shoreline from the Midway toward the south. You'll find some great photo ops along the way, and when you get to the Embarcadero Marina, you're sure to see some really cool yachts. You can also frame up the Coronado Bridge from the park that is right there. If you have the time, take one of the tourist boat trips around the bay. You'll see some cool buildings from the boat, and if you have a good zoom lens, there are some great shots to get.

San Diego is a great place, you'll find the time flies when you're there.

We live in San Diego and one of the first things we usually do with visiting guests is take the hop-on-hop-off trolley. It gives you a good tour of the area and can give you a good idea of where you would like to go back to including the waterfront, Balboa Park, Old Town and Coronado. We find picking it up in Old Town is the handiest. There will be more to do than you have time for, I imagine. Spending time (and photographing) Balboa Park, Coronado and the San Diego waterfront can keep you busy and well provided with photo opportunities. Should you have more time and a car, a drive out to Julian is great in the fall and you are just in time for fresh apples and the almost mandatory apple pie. Julian is an old town given to interesting shops, some good food and more photo opportunities. If the Zoo in Balboa Park is not enough, Safari Park north by Escondido is a great family activity and a wonderful place to take animal pictures. And, there is always quite a selection of beaches. It should be an exciting time for your family. I hope you have a good visit.

While there you may as well go down to the beach and get some great shots of the sea lions. You can get very close to them.

The Zoo, Midway, Balboa Park are all great. The attached photo was taken from Coronado, also a great place to visit.
