Today’s kit camera vs older camera

My Nikon D200 works fine. I am not unhappy with quality

I am looking at getting an IR camera. I like the effect in black and white and don’t have to necessarily deal with golden light time of day issues, etc.

Nikon has a kit at Costco and presumably elsewhere for 600.00 D3500 with w kit lenses , etc.

I am interested in still photography, typically places and things. Sometimes family. No sports. No interest in video. Display typically on a 8x10 or such video picture frame. Might get a little bigger one someday. Rarely print and if so would be 8x 10 or less.

My thought was to convert the kit camera to ir but maybe 10 years later the technology has improved and the kit camera might be a better camera than the D200. Thus maybe the d200 should be converted. Or I should be thinking of something else.

Can folks opine please and make suggestions. Thanks

If you go way back in cameras, they now go for peanuts. My cannon eos 450d is worth about £50. A great camera in its time and still does me well, However the sensor could be changed to IR as easily as any other camera.

It could be to look for a really old Nikon body, rather than choose to change one that you still like. It won't have all the whistles and bells, but do you need them for IR?

have fun

I still have and occasionally use my old D200. It is built like a tank, dependable, and takes incredible images. I wouldn't give it up.

Maybe contact the folks that actually do the conversions - ask their opinion????

Just a WAG on my part.

I have the first 1Ds, a1Ds Mark lll and a 1D Mark lll, if anything were to happen to any of them, I would replace it with the same model.
These new small cameras feel like toys when I pick them up.
I will wait another 5-6 years and buy the 1Dx's for pennies on the dollar.

Buy a used D200 for less than $150 on ebay and convert it.

Have you considered just buying an IR filter to be sure your going to want something permanent

I have done some IR photography with borrowed camera and like the effect, at least in B&W.

An old camera (if reliable and working) is probably the way to go.

I IR converted my D100 and get good results, in your position I would get a secondhand D200 body and convert it, the 12MP would be nice (the D100 only has 6MP). That would have the advantage that you shouldn’t have to think when swapping from IR to normal.
