I just wrote to my friend, Dorienne, and this part of her reply should interest you.

"We have some outstanding lodges where there are vehicles specially equipped with tripods on “ cushions” and other useful photographic equipment like special shades and mirrors. The guides on these vehicles are all themselves experienced and talented bush cameramen ."

Tally ho!

Your lens should be fine except for very distant or very small birds. The rangers and trackers get you very close to the animals, so you might want to pack a wide angle lens as well. It's the trip of a lifetime. Enjoy.

Yes. Long end is not going to be your problem. The fact is you will not be willing to change lenses means that if possible you should carry a second camera with a wide angle capability. Also since a lot of animal action takes place at dawn and particularly dusk you may wish for a larger aprature.

Your lens should be quite sufficient, I used a 28-300 on my last trip (Zambia, Zimbabwe, S. Africa, Tanzania, and Kenya) and didn't use the 200-500 I brought at all.

I think your good to go. I did Africa with a 150-500 Sigma and a 18-280 Tamron. Took a 10-20 Nikon and never used it. Very few wide angle situations.

I'd go with Robert Capa's advice. "If your pictures aren't good enough, you weren't close enough".

Maybe not useful advice in a situation where you aren't in control of how close you can get.

Thank you for your responses. My wife really did not want me to buy a new lense. Would you suggest safari companies you have used?

Hi Charlie, we just completed our 3rd African Safari the other day. The company we used was:

Fish Eagle Safaris Inc.
Bert Duplessis is the owner and primary contact

We used him for a group of 5 on our last trip and this trip it was just my wife and I. Everything went very smoothly and he will tailor to your budget. He is originally from South Africa and returns several times per year to visit new camps to ensure they are up to his standards. You can mention my name. I don't get a kickback nor do I know him personally. But he and his team have been very good at making sure every detail is taken care of.

There are many other reputable companies out there. Make sure to check out their references before you choose one. As the saying goes... You get what you pay for. I have seen several converted Toyota vans with the tops cut out and 9 people crammed into them if you want to do it on a small budget.

We stayed at high end camps and they were really nice. Most of the time there was just 4 of us to a Range Rover vehicle. Several times it was just my wife and I on the drives.

Good Luck!

Many years ago .., We went with Sabi Sabi Game reserve (means River of Fear) ..booked for us through the South African Travel Bureau SATUR as Diplomat Status ...which we entered the Country on this status ..it was nice .. no customs ..anyway .., I was amazed at how close the vehicle came to the animals ..pride of Lyons .etc ..., they just cautioned us to not ever stand up .. we had small land rovers with no tops and 2 gun bearers...

The best advice .. carry 2 cameras one with at least 24-70 ...a wide angle variable for close encounters .. and another camera 200-400 0r sigma sport Varible .. no time to change lenses plus the dust ... post edit the best and don’t worry about the rest...a word of caution ....out in the bush at night .., and they took us out at night ....you can not see your hand in front of your face .. we used a small,LED Red light ..set your camera up for night shots .. sunsets and the reflections of the animals eyes when hit by the vehicles lights and or the spot lights used by the travel, guides ..

Good luck ...you are in for a treat....
