Fall colors in Tennessee.
I have plans to visit Memphis in October. I know there are excellent photographic opportunities near Memphis, like water falls but I have not found any information in the Internet.
If anyone here knows the area or if someone has a link to information about photographic places around Memphis (not the city) I will appreciate that information.
I believe I saw that information here once but I cannot remember who was the OP.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Tennessee’s best waterfalls are in East and Middle TN; I know of none near Memphis, which does not mean they do not exist but does suggest a reason why a Google search revealed nothing.
Can you provide more information on the kind of things you are looking for? Wildlife? Historic sites? And, how far are you willing to go?
Here is a link to the "map of Tennessee waterfalls"
http://www.gowaterfalling.com/waterfalls/maps/statetennessee.shtml I agree with Gaddysmom - Most of your scenic waterfalls are going to be in middle to East Tennessee From Nashville to Knoxville into the Smokies. If you do find some in the western part of the state..let me know! I would like to visit!

Gaddysman, I saw here in the forum information about Memphis and its surroundings. I would have swear I saw a description of a waterfall but of course I could be wrong. Things I am looking for would be anything of interest to photography: landscapes, historic sites, fall foliage and other subjects of photographic interest. Regarding how far to go I would say 100 miles, perhaps 200 miles would be my limit.
I have been to the Smokies in the Tennessee area but that was a long time ago. Deer2ker thank you for the information. I have in the past gone to the Chamber of Commerce of towns I wanted to visit and the information given to me was good for a tourist but not for a photographer.
I have to make more research and hopefully I will get more info about Tennesse. I want to plan in advance to make my trip photographically successful.
Thanks.
Camerapapi, I am not willing to go so far as to say that there are no waterfalls in Memphis or the surrounding area, but I am from the region and I have never heard of any. As to other things to do, Shiloh battlefield is about 100 miles from Memphis. Natchez Trace State Park is about 120 miles from Memphis. And, my personal favorite, Reelfoot Lake is about 120 miles from Memphis. If you decide on Reelfoot, contact the park to find out if they will be offering boat tours, kayak tours of the more distant areas of the park, or eagle tours while you will be there. Obviously, these are largely natural attractions. For architecture, Holly Springs, MS is a lovely small town with many handsome houses. It is about 50 miles from Memphis. There is also LaGrange, TN, which is about 60 miles away, and also lovely. I hope you enjoy your visit.
Thank you for the information. I do believe you about that fall around the Memphis area. I thought I heard about it here in the forum. No big deal, there are many water falls in Tennessee.

I am not sure how I came across this site ShotHotspot (
https://www.shothotspot.com/), but I visited it and created a link on my desktop. It may provide you with locations you may never have even considered....

camerapapi, I lived in TN (Nashville area) for 18 years and frankly there are not much to see regarding waterfalls around Memphis. However not far from Memphis there is the Reelfoot Lake State Park located in the northwest corner of Tennessee and is noted for its fishing, boating and wildlife viewing. The 15,000 acre lake was created by a series of violent earthquakes in 1811-1812 that caused the Mississippi River to flow backwards for a short period of time, creating Reelfoot Lake. It's a nesting area for Bald Eagles - the area is a photographers dream the are is also known for its cypress trees. The area is near the city of Tiptonville, TN

Besides the waterfalls, you asked for "Other" photographic opportunities.
Try the Parthenon replica there. Very beautifully done and interesting.
Reelfoot's the place to go. Right now they have migrating pelicans and a fall festival is next weekend. The city by Reelfoot is Tiptonville. But Reelfoot is cool all year round.

The Parthenon is in Nashville.

Have lived here most of my 66 years and I am not aware of any waterfalls within an hour drive of Memphis. There are some in Arkansas, such as Blanchard Springs, but they are at least a two or three hour drive.
Reelfoot Lake, mentioned by others here, is great place for migrating birds and cypress swamps. Closer to Memphis you might check out Strawberry Plains near Holly Springs MS or Wappanocca Refuge, AR for migrating birds and the local flora and fauna. Both are a quick 30 minute drive or less.
I have a link on my web page that goes to TN landforms. It is detailed and gives a tremendous amount of information. Go to
http://www.kentuckyupclose.com/INTERESTING_LINKS.html and then click on TN landforms. If for some reason you can't get this to work let me know and I will try to get the connection for you. Have a great trip!
Jack
Also I don't know how much time you have or how far you want to travel but keep Reelfoot Lake on your list!
