I submitting three B&W digital photos for a competition with my photography club. One photo I am considering entering is a landscape and I am considering submitting the photo with an image border. Club members in general frown on adding borders saying it is a distraction and does not add anything to the photo. I googled this subject and got mixed comments. Most people like adding a simple border saying it finishes off the photo. Others dont because it can be a distraction. I have added a border to some photos for competition in the past and got criticized for doing so. How do you know when to add a border or not? Would appreciate comments from the UHH forum.

I agree: borderless is better. With a border you're looking through a window. Without a border you're there.

I concur... the border kills it. So much better without.

Are you framing them for display / competition? How does each look in a frame matted?

I prefer No Border.

Interesting--at my camera club there’s always a comment about a borderless image that it somehow seems incomplete. I’m beginning to agree, and I think the bordered image here is the better choice. We almost always mat our prints with borders, so why not do the same with our digital images?

Apparently from the other comments here, I’m about to be crucified.

The photo is for a club non print competition; for digital display by a photo projector. Decided to go borderless

Borders, as with mats, change the relationships of the work itself. You think you have a nice, rich black, add a true black border, and, oops!--your black isn't so black. Stick to borderless.

That actually is a good point. I've seen just that.

Our club prefers a boarder on projected images. This is also frequently mentioned by judges. Try a thin straight white boarder instead of the double boarder with slightly rounded corners. That would by my preference.
