I appreciate everyone's help regarding my past inquiries. What is the best focal length for close up photos, flowers, small intricate things, animal facial expressions, etc. I have a Nikon D750. Any tips regarding type of lens, focal length and/or camera/lens settings would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Look for images from the Nikon 105 macro and you'll likely find the lens and focal length you're looking for.

While I hear Macro types talk about 100 as a great length, you might want to get more specific advice from the True Macro forum @ https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-102-1.html

I've very surprised and happy using my 18-400 (focusing at 18" at the 400 end).

Flowers are sometimes not a good subject for macro lenses because it makes them look too large. A small bud winds up looking like a giant orchid. A 50mm prime lens works well, especially if you want a shallow depth of field. Outdoors in good light you can use any zoom lens, even a telephoto or a wide angle to zoom in on the flower.

That depends you you and your "workflow/style", but in general, a longer focal length (like 180 or 200) will give you a longer working distance to your subjects, and that is preferable when shooting macros of skittish critters, for just close-up shots any close focusing lens should do fine, just take your pick!

Depending on the working distance you anticipate, anything from a 90-105mm to 200mm. I use a 150mm, 180mm - both macro, and a 45 PC-E and 85 PC-E which offer 1:2 magnification at nearest focus distance.

A lens that gives a 1:3 magnification ratio may not be enough for small flowers, even if you are only 18" away.

At the same distance, a Tamron 180 macro provides 1:1, or put another way, the image is 3x bigger.

That is just part of the equation. A true macro is optimized for working at or near it's minimum focus distance. A zoom is not. A 22X zoom? Definitely not.

There is no doubt that you are getting some decent results, however it may not be what the OP is looking for.

What exactly are you skeptical of? The macro part or the different focal length part?

Try the Canon 500D, yes it will work on Nikons too. It comes in several sizes and is a two element lens and not a diopter. https://www.adorama.com/l/?searchinfo=canon+500d

There are several good lenses available in the 90-105mm range. Any of them should work for you just fine.

I think I would want a 150mm Sigma on full frame to do what you want ....
