The Sony A6000 is an excellent little camera for a wide variety of users. If you are just getting into photography you can set it to the Automatic mode and click away and you will get excellent photos. As you become more skilled in using it and become more familiar with the menu system you will want to start using some of the other features of the camera. I would recommend a good book on the A6000 like David Busch's excellent book available from Amazon at a modest price. The menu system can seem complex at first, but after using it a few times, it becomes pretty simple. A good book on the camera like the Busch book will help immensely. I have two A-6000's and they are a about all I use anymore. Check B&H Photo, Adorama, or Cameta for new, refurbished, or used cameras. They are all reputable companies.

I second this and the other comments -- the a6000 is a wonderful camera. Small and lightweight, it is perfect for travel and for anyone who does not want to lug a heavier DSLR around. I've had my a6000 for several years, and it is my go-to camera for everything. You can get lenses with image stabilization if your hand is less than steady -- most Sony lenses have it (it's called OSS).

As mentioned above, you can start out with the Auto mode until you are familiar with the camera. It takes very nice jpegs. If you want to get the most out of it, you'll eventually want to use one of the other modes, shoot RAW, and do your own post-processing (Capture One has an excellent program that is free for Sony cameras, and there are others that have less of a learning curve). The a6000 menu is extensive, but once you know which settings you are most likely to adjust while shooting, you can easily assign them to buttons or a quick-menu on the back of the camera.

The Busch book is excellent, and I've heard that Friedman's is too.

Best of luck -- I'm sure you'll love the a6000.

I noticed last week, Best Buy had the A6000 body, 18-55 lens and 55-210 lenses on sale for $500. Their normal price is $800. First time I have seen it that low. I paid $700 for mine on eBay. Great camera and lenses. For a cheaper and fairly easy to use "pocket size" camera, I use a Sony DSC-HX80 because of it's 30x zoom. On sale at Best Buy they run about $339. I got mine on eBay for around $200 slightly used but works great.

I have the Sony a6000 and I am very happy with it. I would recommend the kit lens, it is very sharp and compact. I would suggest that you go to Flickr and look at the photos that they have. I believe that you will be surprised what the camera and lens can do. If you are on a budget, I would second what has been said about manual focus lenses. Rokinon and Samyang have very excellent lenses. Also for a little more the Sigma lenses, auto focus and make excellent lenses. My opinion is that the these lenses are not only less cost but are sharper and more rugged.

I have two a6000s and one a6500. All of which I bought used. I love all of them. I also have 3 other Sony alpha cameras that are A mount. I couldn't be happier with my Sony's. I have given both my grown daughter's used Sony's that I owned previously. They have been very happy with them. You hear all kinds of stories but Sony is a quality product and you will not be sorry if you choose one.

You get a lot of camera for about $560...much more capable than a point and shoot. But it is, if fully utilized, much more complicated also. Good news...you can use a little of its many options or as many as you may want. U-Tube has many videos about how to use it, but just start out with the automatic settings and you will take pictures like a pro. I have had mine for about 3 months and love it. Who knows, you may develop a new hobby and hours of enjoyment with pictures that will amaze your friends.
Taking low light and nighttime pictures is a plus with this camera regardless of use of the flash.
Good luck

Freda....its a wonderful camera however its an entry level M4/3, read up on the 4/3 scene...if you are not into Lense changing for various whatever reasons don't bother.....look at the higher end Point & Shoot cameras, I recommend Olympus Stylus XZ1 or XZ2, used and under $300 easily, I have both and they both out perform for IQ the 4/3 entry levels, both are fixed lense, small, purse or pocketable, easy to use, and I'm a grandpa on fixed income...

The Sony a6000 is not a (m 4/3) entry level camera. In fact, the Sony APS-C sensor is considerably larger than the (m 4/3) sensor and even larger than the other brands of APS-C. Just correcting the mistake. Look it up. There are diagrams comparing the size of all sensors online.

If you are going to buy a used camera, I would consider buying it at B & H photo video in Manhattan, New York. If you are not satisfied with with the camera for any reason, or no reason, you can return it within 30 days of purchase, no questions asked. They are on the web and you can complete the transaction by telephone. Davidb1879

I'm a professional landscape photographer and my backup camera is a Sony A6000. I also use it on longer overnight hiking trips. You will have to spend a lot more money to get anything nearly as good as this camera.

The A6000 is not a M4/3 camera. It is an APS-C sensor camera. I'm not sure of the math, but I think the APS-C is approx 30% bigger than M4/3 - crop factor 1.5 vs 2.0 for the M4/3.

I have a change to buy a used Sony A6000. Would like anyone’s opinion. I’m fairly new to photography and would like a good camera but have very low budget. Retired grandma on fixed income. Thanks!!

The a6000 is the best camera for the least money you can buy! The weak point will be what lens it has on it. I prefer the 18-200, which does it all. Tamron or Sony lens. You can think about the lens down the road, and enjoy it with the lens it comes with.

Freda, as others have said the Sony A6000 is a good camera and they are happy with it. You didn't say what your budget is, other than "low", or other info like the condition of the camera, shutter count, buying it privately or from a store. Here are a couple of links to B&H and Adorama for used A6000's.

https://www.adorama.com/us%20%20%201039842.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIo-HOq9Oq3QIVR2SGCh3JfwcUEAQYASABEgIB0fD_BwE Adorama offers a 90 Day warranty on used equipment and a 30 day refund policy if you don't like it. This camera is rated as Excellent+ condition and is $359.00 for the body only.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?ci=21264&fct=fct_brand_name%7csony%2bfct_camera-model_6453%7csony-a6000&N=4040479538& B&H has three used A6000's for sale. Two are body only and one(rated condition 9) comes with a 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Zoom Lens for $422.50. The other two are "body only" and are rated a 9+ for $342.95 and a 8+ for $278.50. According to B&H, every used camera comes with their own warranty(which I didn't see how long it is), and also the option to purchase an extended warranty as well.

Again, you didn't give info like camera condition, cost, private sale or store, so its hard to say if you are getting a good deal or not, but this will give you something to compare that A6000 to. Good luck.
