My first camera was a Minolta SRT-101, second was a Nikon F just like yours Grandpaw, honestly I liked the Minolta better, it took better pictures.

After reading all the posts I am an outsider. My mother gave me an Instamatic when I left for RVN. The poor thing had a tough life, quickly getting covered in dust, inside and out.
I knew nothing about camera's then but knew I liked the larger pictures some guys had. I learned that I needed a 35mm. When opportunity presented itself I got into the PX at Camp Radcliff, An Khe and bought the only camera they had and a few rolls of black and white film, no color film in stock.
I still have have that wonderful camera, a Petri FT. I also learned to protect it from elements by keeping it in a 50 caliber ammo can.

We traveled together for years recording everything I seen, only I left it home, regretfully, on my deployment to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
Today, the light meter control is scratchy so it is retired. I still dream of taking it out, just for old times sake.

I entered the digital age with a Canon G3 and moved up from there.

The camera that started it all, a Minolta SRT-101 with a 50mm F1.8, soon after I saved up and traded it for a an F2 (stolen in Armsterdam along with a 105 F2.8 Micro, 200 F4, 50mm F1.4). I have been faithful to the brand since 1970 except for a passing Canon Rebel which I kept a few weeks.
I have not kept any of the older cameras, the new one would replace the one in use. But now that this posting brought back memories the camera that I have owned and most impressed me was a Hasselblad 500CM with the std. 80mm lens. Too bad I couldn’t afford the extra lenses and accessories...

I basically bought the same camera Nikon F with the FTN for my 18th birthday in 1973. The only difference is i bought the 50mm f/1.4 lens. It still works great, what a workhorse of a camera.

Mine was a Nikon FG. It served me well for years. Still have the body but I have not used it in over 20 years.

The first really high-quality SLR I owned. We will be celebrating our 47th anniversary together this coming Christmas Eve. My mum and dad gave this to me for my Christmas present. The F and I have had a number of adventures together and still continue to do so. Used, but never abused.

What a fabulous camera. Congratulations. I made the mistakes of selling my Nikon cameras when digital came in and have regretted it ever since. I've replaced most of the lenses I sold and use them on my Fuji cameras. The Xt1 is the closest to my FM2. My first camera I had was a Paxette given to me by my father about 60 years ago. My first SLR was most probably a Practika.

First purchase was a Leica M3 in 1965. My original camera which I am holding in the photo when I was 7 years old was a gift.

I have had a few of these over the years but this is the actual original camera that I started out with. I was eighteen and went with my dad to the local camera store and told the owner that I wanted a camera that would make me happy and I would not regret buying and this is what he put on the counter. A Nikon F body, FTN meter, and a F2 50mm lens and I can say that I have never been let down by this camera and it looks and operates as good today as when I bought it back in 1971.

What was your first camera to purchase.

The old F: if you didn't have a hammer handy and needed to drive a nail you could use the F. Those were the good old days.

The first camera I used back in the early '50s was a Kodak brownie.

Then came the Hawkeye followed by a Kodak Retina; there were more and then came the iconic Canon AE-1 in 1978.

Kodak Model No. 2 Brownie

My first camera was a Canon EX-Auto ≈1973.
(Followed by an Ftb and then an AE-1. Still have the Ftb and AE-1 sitting in the curio cabinet.)

My 1st camera was nearly identical to yours. Only I got the 55 f1.2 Nikkor lens (Body and meter same...Nikon Photomic Ftn). I bought minein 1972 in the Ginza shopping district of Tokyo. Still works like a champ. Purchased my 2nd camera (Nikon F2as) in Tokyo a few years later in 1976. That still woks fine too.

First 35mm was a Cavalier rangefinder from Willoughby-Peerless in NYC at around 13 years old in 1963. First SLR was a Minolta XG-7, because that was what I could afford. After it was stolen in a burglary I replaced it with a Canon AE-1 Program, which I still have and I've been a Canon user ever since.
Now in retirement I collect the film cameras I only dreamed of when they were current...lots of Canons (old SLRs, F-1, A-1, AE-1, EOS film, etc) and Nikkormats and Nikon F2 thru F4.
And now there are Canon film cameras I would love to have that are too expensive for me to buy....like a T90, EOS 1V and 1N.

Kodak Retina IIC in 1951. My youngest son now has it. Still in great shape and works.

The Nikon F was the first good 35mm camera I got way back then, and yes it was and is a trusty instrument--but now I've gone to the Nikon digital models!!
