OMG, I really can NOT believe what I’m hearing about partition vs. folder. I don’t care! I know the difference. Several websites I queried about this problem, all called the process “partitioning a media card.” I know my camera, and I have been doing photography many years. And, this type of chastising on a forum is why I do NOT usually post anything. Its not informative. Its called being “condescending.”

I know about folders, I know about “100-999” folders, I know all that. My D810 nor does my D5 do that. I provided a screenshot of what I was talking about.

Delete the #2 folder (try to do it in camera) then reformat (in camera) and see if another folder is produced but, as mentioned, if you shoot more than 1,000 photos, another folder will be produced by the camera.

My D850 are formatted my SD & XQD cards the same. Each has only one partition. On a Mac, I can see only one partition named "Nikon D850" with "Disk Utility". When you look at either card with "Finder", you'll see only the "Nikon 850" partition with camera created folders. I formatted the the 64GB SD card via Disk Utility, which then used 9.8MB. I then formatted the same SD card in the D850. Disk Utility then showed 18.2MB used. Therefore, the D850 formatting consumed 8.4MB more in creating its four folders; DCIM -> MISC and NIKON ->D850. Disk Utility showed 64.04GB available for images and other stuff.
I see the D850 using negligible card space for housekeeping, less then 1/2 the space of a single RAW image file.

I suggest you call Nikon. I know a guy that called them from the field and they were very helpful. I think it's just a setting in your camera. I bet you can figure it out by just going through each and every menu item one by one. Don't put up with all the condesending bullshit you read hear. Just go another direction and you shall succeed.

Still sleuthing your problem. In Adobe Bridge, I still get only one partition, which is different from your Adobe Bridge screen capture.
I agree with you that you do have an anomaly. My first guess would that the D850 may create two partitions if the card was VERY large. But, your cards are small. My XQD card is 128GB and has only one partition. You may try saving your settings onto a spare SD card and then reset the D850 via Menu > Setup > Reset all settings. Test again. I don't think this reset performs a complete reset to factory default. A brief Internet search to NikonUSA.com support did not address the D850. You may have to contact a Nikon humanoid for guidance. Good luck. I'm interested in the solution.

THIS is partitioning a memory card. It creates a new volume with a drive letter. I am pretty sure, despite your protestations you are still a little fuzzy on this.

Believe it or not, we ARE trying to help, but you keep insisting on using your own non-standard terminology and confusing folders and partitions, even in this post that I am responding to.

Knowing the difference between folders and partitions is fundamental. You are correct, you don't need to stress over this. You just bite the bullet, learn the difference and move on. Dismissing the importance of the difference is like knowing the difference between the brake pedal and the gas pedal. Ignoring that there is a difference can be catastrophic . . . Just sayin'

I wish that I'd never opened this discussion. Now, I'm scared s___less.

Thank all of you who gave me answers, real answers and real help, and not crap about "partition vs folder." As a last straw, I will call Nikon to see if they can help. Having called them in the past on another issue, it did not result in anything positive though.

Not sure if you've tried this: Use Disk Utility to reformat card with only a single partition. (My Disk Utility does not give me the ability to create a second partition.) Then reformat in D850. See if it creates a second partition. It should not. My thoughts are perhaps if the D850 sees two partitions before formatting, it works on both rather than REALLY erasing the card and starting anew.

Unfortunately for you, it's 100% CRITICAL to know the difference in order to resolve your question. If you "I do not want to stress over if its called "partitioned or folders," then why are you here wasting our time asking this question?

Thanks but I have already tried that. Once I put the card back into the D850, reformat, I get the same thing: Nikon D850#1 and Nikon D850#2. Is it possible that video files are going on the Nikon D850#2?
