I have used the Tamron 18-400 on my D7100 since the lens hit the market. I use it indoors and out of doors. It's my favorite new lens.

I have the Tamron 18-400. It is a very good lens for the price. You will have to pay a lot more for a lens that is noticeably sharper.
I use the Tamron 18-400 to take shots (without tripod) of passing airliners at 30,000ft with con trails. Takes tack-sharp photos when used correctly (find something to lean on). I can read the name and logo, distinguish the colors and see the wheel panels on the underside. Impressive lens and the only one that I use lately. Happy!!
I love my 18-400. I first wanted it for the extreme range it has . It’s not too heavy and is the perfect walk around lens. I find I take my camera to a lot more places because I don’t have to worry about having a bag full of lenses. I still use my other lenses, but when I don’t know which one to bring the 18-400 is perfect. I find the image quality to be very good and the focus fast and accurate. It has become my go to lens and I highly recommend it.
Not very happy with my 18-400. 2nd time sending it back to Tamron for repair
Hi Alex
I have been using the 18-400 Tamron on my Nikon D300S for about a year now and I love it! The only proble is that between the camera which is built like a tank and the lens, it weighs a ton.
Tamron in general makes good lenses and is a good cost effective alternative to the more expensive Nikon or Canon lenses.
I shot Nikon and I have both Nikon and Tamron lenses and I really don't see a difference in their performance.
I recently upgraded my Tamron 16-300 for the Tamron 18-400. So far I'm very pleased with the change. It seems really strong as I approach 400mm and is acceptable as the wider range as well. Like the 16-300 it isn't the fastest in low light. In all it's a great walk around lens for me. (I shoot a Nikon D7100)

I have the Tamron 18-200mm and have been using it on my 77D with great results.
With my camera's 1.6 crop factor, I'm getting a field of view equivalent to 320mm.
I'm completely satisfied with this lens, and the price was great on Amazon.

I think we can all agree that Tamron is among the very best lens maker in the world. Their quality is unsurpassed. Don’t get wrong, I love Nikon lens, but I cannot afford them. Tamron definitely fills the void for those of us that can’t afford Nikon and Cannon lenses.

I use a Tamron 150-600 for my wildlife shots on my Nikon D7100 and love it.
Yes me too (G2 on the 7200)....it takes a while to master this lens and use the right VC mode. Generally better quality from a tele-zoom (or wide/normal zoom) than an all-in-one 18-400 which is full of compromises. I suspect for BIF shots the D500 will be a better body to use this lens on.
I have a 18mm-270mm Tamron that I have used for landscape, outdoor, family and sports photography for over 10 years with my Nikon D750 and and D7000. It is my primary lens and the quality of the images are superlative. The only limitation is that it is not as fast (f3.5 - 6.5) as I would like but it is what I can afford at this time. In general it is a lower cost alternative to a Nikon lens that can suit your needs for a variety of photographic situations.
I hope this helps you in your decision.
Larry
P.S. I also have Tamron 200mm-500mm and 10mm-24mm

I have a Tamron 18-200mm f/variable (Pentax K-FA Mount). It is a pretty good lens as a walk-around lens. But in bright back-lighting I do get a little blue fringing. Something I've never seen with any of my actual Pentax branded lens. And this Tamron does not come close in sharpness to my smc-Pentax DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 Zoom lens. I am rather fussy and mainly shoot with Prime lenses (for most serious shots).
I believe there have been Tamron 18-200mm, 18-300mm, and 18-400mm Zooms. They may produce different IQ per brand mount. Price-wise for use on a Nikon camera it may be a good choice. I am assuming you mean for a APS-C sensor camera.
Once again I will suggest going to a store that will let you handle one on a camera. If you are satisfied, fine. If you find it too heavy you might consider a lighter alternative such as the Tamron 18-270, Sigma 18-300, or Sigma 18-250(an older model).
