For the same reason as Bill MCK states, that's why I transfer back off the iPad to the iXpand drive, as I mention in my first reply. You can't always predict how much space you will need on the iPad, so the iXpand provides that capacity as any USB drive would. JimR

Thanks for all the replies. I mainly wanted to transfer photos to the iPhone to put on social media. But I think now that I’ve thought about it more, it would just be easier and less hassle to take any photos I want to post on the iPhone and use the 80D for everything else. No sense making it harder than necessary!! I will howeve take several SD cards just to make sure I can take all of the photos that I want to take.

I may still get the Apple SD card to lighting dongle, haven’t decided. It is not too pricey.

I used the dongle and iPad years ago and it only recognized jpegs. My iPad gave out after a few years so I was going to buy another. Instead I got a Microsoft Surface Pro. A bit larger than iPad but about the same weight. Has all of the function of a laptop, converts to a tablet and sees raw and jpg. On a South Africa trip I shot thousands of shots in 3 weeks and it all went into the 500GB SSD Drive without straining. Fully functional Lightroom and backed all of that on a WD 2 TB portable. I have 2 64GB cards in my camera and rarely will I fill one up on any given day. I’m really happy with the functionality of this setup.

Yes, the Apple SD card to Lightening adapter that connects to an iPad or iPhone works and easy to use.

I have the dongle and have used it with my iPad without any problems. If you use it with a laptop or desktop, the Photos application or app will download JPEG and RAW files but the image that is displayed defaults to the JPEG file. If you shoot only RAW files, the RAW file will be displayed and open in Photos. If you shoot RAW + JPEG, when you load the pictures into Photos, the JPEG file will be displayed. Select the JPEG thumbnail, then go up to the Image menu and near the bottom select Use RAW as Original. You can always go back to the JPEG by repeating the Image menu and choosing Use JPEG as Original. When you transfer RAW + JPEG photos to Photos, the thumbnail will show a little "J" icon in the upper left corner with little "stacked" rectangles indicating that the JPEG is on top but it is stacked with the RAW image. Hope you find a method to download your photos that works well for you.

Depending upon how much memory your pad has, why not upload to the pad then to google photos or the apple version of that and once in the cloud remove those images from your device and upload another group.

Better yet, your 80d is Wi-Fi capable. If you got an iPad or an iPhone you can Wi-Fi direct to your device using the Canon camera Connect app which is available free from the app store. I do this anytime I have a shoot. Since my stuff is backed up to iCloud I'm covered there. (when you have a Wi-Fi connection to the outside world) I also automatically have my phone or iPad upload to Google photos, so I have a second copy up there again when Wi-Fi is available. The Canon connect app is great.

I use the Apple photo doggle with the USB and lightening ends. I plug my camera with a USB cable directly into the doggle and download the photos into my IPad Pro. I then use the Sandisk iExpand that is available online at Amazon, B&H and sometimes at Costco to transfer the files. To my surprise when I transferred files they were in RAW. I would prove it to you by showing a RAW image off the IPad that I’m using right now, but the files are huge and the UHH program can’t handle them. I have also bought a Wireless Hard Drive because of my fear of RAW not downloading and had imperfect success downloading from a card reader and directly with SD cards into the Western Digital Wireless Drive. 5 downloads worked flawlessly, one did not download into the appropriate folder and scattered photos throughout the Drive. Very weird.

I neglected to say that the reason RAW can be downloaded is that I use the cloud as storage and the iPad as a iCloud device. The Dongle that I bought for cameras is at least 4 yrs old and works flawlessly, I also had one for SD drives that works great, but lost it along the way. The USB port, In my experience, only works for cameras/photos.

If I was shooting raw, I would do nothing but directly transfer the files from the SD card directly to a computer. after that, then I could manipulate them as needed for whatever device I wanted them on.

Works great with my Air 2 Ipad.

Piranha is the apple app for viewing and editing Raw images.
