A closeup panorama of Tahquamenon Falls in Michigan's Upper peninsula last Wednesday. Not the best time of year for color there. Tahquamenon Falls is the second highest waterfall east of the Mississippi, 40 ft. high. The water looks like root beer.

Where does the nasty color of the water come from? Heavy prior rain? Industry? Iron in the bedrock?

Color comes from tannin in leaves.

I think the water is very high in iron making it brownish. And that’s a beautiful shot!

As a UP native, known as a Yooper, the falls water is notably brown in color from the tannins leached from the cedar swamps which the river drains. Unique to this series of falls. Great capture by Fotoartist and thanks for sharing.

Ok, we have the same thing in N.C. and the water is pretty much black turning to dark brown when it runs over a falls...the black keeps you from seeing the water moccasins while you're fishing!

Fotoartist....At 40', Tahquamenon would not be the 2nd highest falls east of the Mississippi. The middle and upper falls of the Genessee River are both higher. There is also at least one falls in the Smokey Mountains Nat. Pk. that is higher.

I’m pretty sure Niagra Falls is east of the Mississippi.

And I suspect many more over 40 ft.
