Photo opportunities in Montreal
Hi everyone: I am heading to Montreal next week, will have a couple of days free to wander about, and am looking for ideas of places to visit that would be good photo opportunities. I have searched this forum, and found some good ideas (Notre Dame for sure), but they date from 2012, so I was wondering if others had been there more recently. Also, any recommendations on lenses to bring. I am leaning toward a 24-120 f4 and a 16-35 f4 (Nikon D850) for buildings and interiors. Thanks in advance!
I was there in 07 and had a great visit. I found all of the colorful and creatively decorated doors very interesting in the downtown area. The street performers in the Square were also a lot of fun! Iām sure you will enjoy yourself! Bon champs!!

Pete, I like their Botanical Gardens and just street photography on Saint-Catherine St. Both lenses are great for Montreal
Well, I go there often, I have family up there. Try this: Older sections of St. Laurent Blvd [closer to the bottom], St. Denis and the side streets between St. Laurent and St. Denis [they run parallel]. The Old Town and along the water front. The best light is in the mid AM and mid PM. Those older down town streets are narrow. I don't know what you like to shoot, but there is great stuff along the river. Those are my hunting grounds. Enjoy. Example attached:
Was there last October.
A little late In the season, but loved it. A target rich environment.
The city square and surrounding areas have been used to depict Paris in several movies. Have a beaver tail but skip the poutine.
I believe there is a great view from Mount Royal.
The sunrise/sunset and moonrise view over the city from the Mount Royal Observation deck will give you some opportunities for good shots.
In addition to what others have said, I liked Saint Patrick's basilica, and the Musee des Beaux-Arts.
Great suggestions! Thank you, all.
Don't miss dusk and sunset from the top of Mount Royal. You may even want to put your camera down and just enjoy the changing light. Be sure to bring a flashlight for the walk back down those stairs though! Notre Dame Basilica is an absolute must as is Old Montreal. Mary Queen of the World (Reine du Monde) right by the train station is another must-see church. And be sure to wander around the McGill campus and the Plateau for some great architecture. If it's a clear day, the view of the east end of the city from the top of the Olympic Stadium tower is also spectacular.
I've done three separate stints in Montreal (childhood, undergrad and work after graduation) and I left a large part of my heart there.
Catherine
One other option is the subway=== there is another whole city below Montreal... just a thought...

All good suggestions, and if you have a car do not forget Mt Tremblant, about 90 minutes away along a picturesque route
You will not be disappointed. Two weeks ago went up for Diner en Blanc Montreal. My contribution suggest the markets like Atwater accessible by Metro if you're not driving. Have a wonderful trip and good shooting š.
My original hometown! Downtown Montreal is a street photographer's dream. There is always something happening. And there are festivals of various types all summer long. Old Montreal is fantastic for old world and nautical shots. The parks and gardens are beautiful this time of year. And then there's the very European architecture. Take lots of memory cards. Enjoy.
