While you intellectuals continue to discuss this, I am going to go outside and click a shutter!

you're reading my mind... Too much time? why do you have a camera?
The camera gets what the grandkids, my wife, neighbors, and living life, leaves for me, to myself.
It's either post edit or working the camera....
Philosophical wanderings? I keep them to the subjects in the viewfinder.

well, then there's this...

Don't think so much. Get out and take pictures. Everything in life, including you, the dog, the Squirrel outside your window, the Earth, the Solar System, the Galaxy and the entire universe is a collection of electrons. Does that make you feel any better?

I do like the shot but I think it is too hot in the center which is where the eye goes immediately when viewing this shot. Shot at sunset with the sun in the shot would have helped I think.

There are photographers and there are people who take pictures.

Weird thoughts come to old people with too much time on their hands.

Should we continue to call ourselves photographers? Photographers record analog images on film, process and print the images creating photographs and if you are a professional sell these little pieces of reality as a source of income. I suggest that we have become collectors and manipulators of electrons. For many, if not most of us, the great majority of our electron collections remain just that--electrons. I sent my last roll of film in for processing and what did I get back, a link to a web site so I could retrieve my electron collections. I have begun thinking of my images stored on my computer as Electron Collections and the prints stored in my photo albums and files as pictures. Electron collections only become images when they are viewed or printed.

Before I change my mind I am going to send this and see what happens

You are losing track of the objective in creating images via the use of cameras. If you just want to concentrate on capturing photons or channeling electrons, get into something else, such as solar energy production or electronics.

Being an old dinosaur, I'll say that photography is derived from two words (both Greek, I recall): photos meaning light and graphos meaning something drawn or written. Hence, a photograph is something drawn or written with light. I don't think we have to try to bring the concept into the twenty-first century no matter what the media (film or electrons).

Shot at sunset with the sun in the shot would be a boring same old same old kind of image. His interpretation of the scene is very striking and sets up an interesting mood, but it clearly does not appeal to everyone.

Painting with light is what photography is, of course. How that painting is captured seems quite irrelevant (film vs everything else). It seems to me to be just another medium, such as painting with oil on canvas vs watercolor on paper, etc. they are both paintings, but they share nothing in common, save the finished product. You're also jumping straight into and supportive of Bertrand Russell's discourses regarding existence and experience....you know...if a tree falls in a forest, does it make a sound? Your suggestion that the collection of electrons doesn't become a photograph until it is printed or viewed is essentially the same. You could drop the word printed and Sir Russell would smile from his grave.

We are photographers, creating a photographic image.
No differentiation as to how it is accomplished.

Thank you for the critique, but you should know, that was the sunrise, behind them. The view from the far side at sunset is not available. (to me - geographically)
I may have lightened it a little too much, in edit... But the point was to the O-P; there's always fishing, as well !!

- and thank you mr silvers.

Couldn't have been me. I haven't got any "moving electrons" to send. I'm still figuring out "still electrons"🙄🙄
