PHOTOGRAPHERS.. SHOULD BE LICENCED
While I am not of Arabic descent, I think this is instructional.
"He that knows not,
and knows not that he knows not
is a fool.
Shun him
He that knows not,
and knows that he knows not
is a pupil.
Teach him.
He that knows,
and knows not that he knows
is asleep
Wake him.
He that knows,
and knows that he knows
is a teacher.
Follow him."
(Arabic proverb)
I would like to point out that this site (and other's) does not come with a full-blown, diagrammed, easy-to-read instruction manual. I have enjoyed many of the posts here, regardless of the level of expertise shown by posters.
However, should a manual come to light, I think an expression should be added (if it doesn't already exists): Photography Snobbery.
If you are so keen for everyone to conform to what you believe is the proper way to engage in dialogue regarding photography, perhaps you should start a thread on it and be informative rather than complaining.

To the original post.
I am 72 and been taking photos for years and I am not a pro and never will be, it is a never ending lesson.!!
I have a camera and I don't feel Carioca was speaking to me.
I think the camera challenged people know who they are...hopefully
Sounds like....bitter, party of one!

Are you kidding me? Licensing "pro" photographers! If you go that far, you may want to consider drug and alcohol testing them as well. I'm curious what the fine is if a "pro" gets caught shooting without a license? Nothing like a good laugh with my morning coffee!
uhhh... wait rite thar a minnutt! u mean cause i got this here camra thet eyem now a REAL foetoegraffer? HAOT DANG !! but where kin i git one of them lisins? i cant go bakk to that there lisinns branch no more. i dont wanna talk bout THAT.
I don't consider myselft a pro, would love to get there someday, but I do appreciate everyone on this site with thier expertise, I do go out and shoot photos to practice and build up a portfolio, but I also read everything and watch everything I can to learn. So I just want to say thanks to those who do answer some questions that you think we should know. I wish and have always wanted to go to school to learn more. Cant afford to though so I am learning trhough this site and anything I can get my hands on, after I read stuff, I go out and practice. I love taking pictures especially of people.
For my two cents, getting a drivers license is just a paper that says you are safe enough to venture out in public with a huge heavy machine. Driving is a lifetime of learning, and for most of us, getting better each day.
Photgraphy is the same. How many people had a polaroid for the first camera. The subject didnt really matter, it was getting the picture printed in your hand that was unique.
Having too many photographers might make it tougher for pros to make a buck, but look at the advances in gear and technology and reduction in prices because of the numbers of users.
The same could be said about wanna be writers and authors. Before the advent of computers and word processors writing was a skilled trade. It took me years to establish myself and land a job as an editor for a large magazine.
NOW?? You can talk to the computer and tell it a story, then run the text through right writer or style writer, do a spelling and grammer check and fire it off to a publisher. There is so much pure crap being submitted now that a pro has trouble getting throught the door.
But life goes on. I am not a "Professional" photographer, but my work has graced the covers and pages of numerous publications in support of articles or features I have written.... and been paid for .... does that make me a pro??
Don't worry about other people . If they can cut the mustard , they will go down the drain!

For some reason this thread reminds me of the candle makers of Florence who went on strike against unfair competition from the sun.
Their demand was that the homes all have the windows shuttered.
There will always be those who are proficient in any profession and those who are not.
All those in favor of " Learner permits", and an unpaid apprenticeship to licensed photographer for a few years before qualification together with the outlawing of digital photography say "Aye"
Licensing prevents new people starting out inn the field (eliminates competition) and generates money for the licensing agency and education providers. It isn't going to improve the qualities of someone else's pictures
