I believe it was the great American author Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens ) who once said,
"The report of my death has been greatly exaggerated!".

I certainly hope not soon. I've got too much invested.

What about the “demize” of the language? Please uze a spell checker or a dictionary. (Yes I am a stickler)

In my opinion... more than likely. Technology moves forward. The iPhone changed photography, and videography. I got a Practica 35mm camera when I was 12. My dad bought it out of Alden’s catalog. (Gone the way of encyclopedia britanica). I bought a Nikon FE when I was 14. Bronica 2 1/4 at 16... I’ve stuck w Nikon and now 40 yrs later shoot a D4. My next camera will be a mirrorless. ( my 9 yr old couldn’t lift the D4 w 80-200 2.8 and sb700 to hit face). Not sad that tech moves on, I’m looking forward when I can afford the move. Alas for my Brother that has recently spent $200k on Nikon gear. His new 850 and D5 are Magnificent, but will be replaced in the near future by mirrorless. I’m sure he will “Love” those cameras for Years and Years! As I will the D4. Maybe when Nikon comes out w a ML I won’t have to replace all my glass:)

No cell phone, iPhone or any other, will take the place of a good quality DSLR or even a good quality point-and-shoot. There may be lenses that can be added, but . . . .

Don't be too sure about any of this. What is really needed now for more IQ is something better than the current Bayer Array Sensors. More and tinier pixels just like computer CPU clocks speeds that went in a different direction for faster and better computing (2, 4, 8 core microprocessors), the camera sensor will likely change to improve to get past the limit of around 24MP for a APS-C sensor due to diffraction limitations. The limit for FF for Bayer is likely around 55MP. Might get a bit more out of the old Bayer with focus shifting and other optical tricks. There are limits to things due to physics. Optical microscopes are still mostly around 1000x, or 1500x for a really pricey one, and limited to 2000x for the best state of the art. It has to do with the wave lengths and refractive properties of visible light. For massive magnification we have the Electron Microscope.

I thought that was spelled wrong when I first started reading this thread. I knew what was meant so I did not look it up.

"demize" and "uze", what?

No TLR Cameras were harmed in the writing of this thread.

Notice to all Hoggers: I am starting an "Old DSLR Shelter & Home" for those old unwanted, out-of-date, not so "latest and greatest" miserable old lonely DSLR's that have been displaced by the "Mirrorless" generation. None will be turned away, and all will be treated with dignity and respect (and if they still work, they will be walked and put thru their paces regularly). Don't throw them away, donate today!!!! If they are former Veteran Cameras, or Law Enforcement & First Responder Cameras they will also retain that distinction.

Better sell all of your DSLR stuff to me CHEAP. Have money, looking for equipment that can be used for years taking award winning photo's.
Equipment has never been the way to improve. Only if the person advances in personal knowledge will there ever be an advancement in image quality.

Do I believe the DSLR will disappear? Absolutely not. Keep in mind, all manufacturing companies, photography companies being just one of many, must keep improving their "mousetraps". Cell phone companies, washing machines, automobiles, and the like. If their ""improvements"" flatten, their sales flatten too. Cell phones acquired cameras as a perk, washing machines can now be connected to the Internet, and cars now can automatically stay-in-their-lanes automatically. Canon, my company of choice, pretty much added all possible "whistles and bells" on the 5D2 camera. In fact, that model did nearly all the things the top 1D cameras can do. So, consider the question: when you reach the top of your game, as a manufacturer, where do you go from there?? You must make a better mouse trap. Solution? Mirrorless, a brand new market. This makes total sense to me. After all, if Canon, Nikon, and Sony had been reading UHH over the past year, they read so many complaining about the weight of their DSLR. Bingo, light weight mirrorless wins. It is the solution.

So am I going to toss my DSLR into the trash? Hell no. In fact, I recently bought a second 5D2 body. I plan to use both of these for the next ten years, or more. Do I believe Canon will drop the DSLR line? Absolutely not. I predict they will, in fact, drop the entry level models. Customers for those models will certainly select the mirrorless models. But the users of the upper end will continue to "want the upper end". So no, do I predict that Canon, Nikon, and Sony will drop the upper end of the DSLR cameras? Absolutely not.

By the way, before you think I'm opposed to the mirrorless cameras, I own two of the Lumix TX80 cameras. I consider them my 'pocket' cameras, and they serve that purpose well. (And I do not like the view window.)

And before anyone or everyone calls for the "end of the world", in the form of current technology being flushed down the toilet, replaced by the newest of what Marketing Departments are pushing our way, I just heard an item in the Sky news broadcast. At our home, we have ClassicFM on 24/7. It broadcast from London, and their news reports include European trends. Yesterday I heard them report that the sales of "dumb phones" has increased greatly. Last year, in the UK alone, 2.4 million Nokia dumb phones were sold. As of July this year, more than 2.6 Nokia dumb phones have been sold in the UK already. When asked why, the report included a sound byte of a woman who said: "my best friend told me that I had just checked my smart phone over 100 times that day, and she misses our friendship when we are together. So I've dumped my smart phone for a dumb phone, so I can reconnect with my best friend". Interesting, 2.6 million Nokia dumb phones sold so far this year.

Do I think DSLR cameras will disappear? Absolutely not.

I have a Sony A7IIs and like the pics it turns out just fine, my one major dislike however is the view locking out when you snap a shoot. I took a picture of my dog standing still and when the frame cleared for the next shoot he was gone, Action photography going to be real hard if your subject can meander out of your view between shoots.

It's all pretty much irrelevant, as is the constant barrage of articles about the demise of the DSLR. Cameras evolve with the available technology. It's a good thing. As long as my DSLR's continue to function, I will continue to use them.[/quote]

I will use mine till it dies & Nikon will no longer repair it. Maybe a good time to pick up some cheap back ups!

Priceless. I will also be keeping an eye out for unwanted DSLRs. I have a collection of over 30 35mm cameras I picked up from the local thrift store when people were getting rid of them. I hardly see one anymore. I wonder how long it will be before they begin donating their DSLR equipment. I think most people just use their iphone now. That is about all I see anyone using now days. I even use mine. It is so much easier to carry an iphone than a camera.

Like film cameras, old technology never dies, it just fades away.
