Yes I know a Shutterbug is online. I use it often, but I still miss the tangible periodicals that you could keep on the coffee table and enjoy. I am in the modern world as a pro shooter still, but I do miss some of the older periodicals that I enjoyed and worked for. Cheers
For sure I think a printed copy is best , I have collelected quite a few...
What a brilliant post, man!
You've nailed it BIG TIME!!!

This thread suggests there needs to be a place where the all-time-great articles on the technical matters of photograohy (exposure triangle, focusing, depth-of-field, white balance, etc) are to be found. Many articles on each of those technical factors have been written, but some stand out to be diamonds. Of course, the artistic aspects stand alone, though I suppose there are some general guides so to forestall the occasional blunder.
I noticed the year before Shutterbug folded that their issues were getting smaller and smaller almost every month. I actually failed to renew my subscription because it appeared to be going away. I also subscribe to Outdoor Photographer and it, too, is getting smaller and smaller. rgranaderphoto is right. Print media is just becoming too expensive for them. Before Shutterbug, one or two other photo mags failed. Fortunately, we have UHH to partially assuage our grief.

Damn. First they said they got bought by a UK group, now I just got word that my subscription is being moved to "Outdoor Photographer." June was the last issue.
I had the happy honor to write for them during the early days of digital photography and one of my "how-to" guides was a cover story that ended up very nicely for me.
What a loss. Where are new photographers going to go to learn things? Youtube?
Yep that's where everyone goes these days...you tube...fix the furnace find it on you tube....fix the car find it on you tube... problem I see is that the video on you tube is all amateur video shot by some student who hopes to shoot pro football next year because of his new video degree and you tube video posts. The problem is the kid won't get to shoot that game without hours of free time devoted to a local free tv cable office where he will train for several years while he delivers pizza for a living. It takes devotion to go that far in video. I have been told that still photography is dead and I continue to argue that point. Proof is seeing how many UHH'ers there are here and the many 11x14's I have next to me today. Magazines are going digital and if they cannot go digital they are going broke. I wish it were different.

Lets face it. The new generation just don't like to read the printed page anymore. They get all their information from the boob tube or their computer.
Hey! Just be thankful that SHUTTERBUG is at least giving you something. My subscription was to run into 2020, and I haven't heard anything from them. I would let them extend my subscription to Outdoor Photographer even though I agree with those who don't think it's all that great a magazine. Now if they could give me a discount on PhotoPlus, that would be nice.
FREE, FREE, FREE...I have a large collection of 'vintage' photo magazines that I would like to get to a good home. Without actually doing an inventory, I think I have about 15 or so years of back issues of Modern Photography, Pop Photography, American Photographer..maybe a few more assorted issues. Without going through all of them, I'm thinking they might date from the early to mid nineties until about 2010...the Modern Photography issues would be of their last dozen years of publication...so somewhere in the 1975-1989 period.
The 'catch' is that I would like to have them picked up here in Topeka, KS. They are in storage now, which is only a block away from an Interstate Hiway….I-435, an easy place to find when you are passing through....

Yes, and hundreds of sites with text content.
Outdoor Photographer is not going to fill the gap created by the loss of Shutterbug. I was never a subscriber to Shutterbug but can appreciate your feelings about the loss oaf a good source of more basic information.
That said, I subscribe to Outdoor Photographer and find it very informative and helpful. It has helped me grow and enhanced my skills. I think it is an excellent publication.
