I am new to photography having taken photos mainly of family with a phone camera. I am now learning about more serious photography and will be spending a month in Europe early next year and would like to buy a small camera with video capability to take with me. The number of choices is overwhelming, but after some research, I decided I want a mirrorless camera with a decent multi-purpose range lens and a price preferably under $1800. The Sony A711 and A 6500 as well as Canon EOS M6 have caught my attention. I would appreciate any comments about these as well as other possible choices and lenses to go with them. Thank you.

Also look at Fuji mirrorless cameras, especially the ones with 4000 Video capability.
Are you looking for a point and shoot, or a full dslr?

Welcome to the forum. Have a great trip to Europe. My preference would be for either Sony A711 or A 6500.

Since you have time, and the amount you plan on investing is fairly substantial, consider renting equipment and learning your basics, and whatever setup suits you before buying.
All the cameras you mention seem like great choices, then you will probably spend years deciding on the best lenses.
P.S. Canon, and Nikon are rumored to be introducing high end mirrorless cameras this year, so medium, and discount models should follow shortly.

If you are seriously considering getting into digital photography get an entry level dslr with a couple of kit lenses and take the time to learn the camera system before you go.
Otherwise get a reasonably priced point and shoot camera. Struggling with a complex and unfamiliar camera system will both reduce your enjoyment of your vacation and lessen the chances of getting memorable pictures of what may be a once in a lifetime experience.

Very good advice from all.
A friend has let me use his older Nikon D5100 so I can learn and practice. This is a bulky camera and my intention of getting a mirrorless was the smaller size, which is important to me when traveling. I will be on the lookout for any new Canon or Nikon cameras in the next few months.
The comparison between the Sony a11 and a6500 is very helpful. I also heard that Sony has a new 6700 also coming. I have looked at point and shoot cameras, but I think I can learn and be able to handle a camera with more features between now and my trip.
Does anyone think I should consider the Canon EOS M6? I saw it recommended by Consumer Reports, but I prefer advice from seasoned users as in this forum.
Have you thought about the Sony RX10M4? All in 1 camera. 24 - 600 lens included 1 inch sensor great low light shots and what is nice you do not have to interchange lenses.
