But I didn't do anything …

When I read some of the problems posted here I recall mentoring a co-worker on using the first computers we got in the office. When I'd query her on what happened, she would look at me wide-eyed and tell me she didn't do anything. Right.

Sounds like my eldest grandson. He was trying to connect to the internet in a hotel room using his Kindle Fire and lost everything from it. Grandma had just said a couple minutes before that he probably would not be able to connect as she had problems connecting her phone. When asked what he did, he replied, "Nothing."

Many, many years ago, I was in systems support. Part of my job was the care and maintenance of compilers. Periodically, a programmer would come to us and tell us the Cobol compiler was broken, because his program wouldn't compile. "What did you change?" "Nothing." "Then, why are you recompiling the program?" Crickets chirping.

The question "what did you do?" implies guilt. The answer "nothing" is just a way people young and old react as none of us like the sting of admitting error. A better question is tell me what happened or show me what happened or something similar. Just my experience in dealing with people. Hope this helps.

Sometimes people say "nothing" because they don't know they did "something" so I find it better to try to determine last exact steps taken. Sometimes it is as simple as having pushed a wrong key or button in error. How many times have we seen here at UHH that someone has unknowingly changed a setting, so their answer would be "nothing".

That's an excellent way to approach it. Thanks.
