I've never hired anyone using an application. It takes about five minutes to tell if they can run a bulldozer.

How long does it take to know if they know "when and where" to run that bulldozer?

My oldest trained for heavy equipment with Team Rubicon and when he does X hours for them he gets his certificate. Then he plans to stop substitute teaching "I'd rather be on a dozer then in front of a room full of teens who don't want to be there. And it pays better most of the time."
He did 6 years Army as a combat engineer and is now Army Reserve as Civil Affairs (the kinder/gentler Special Forces - they would rather build you a new school than decide to shoot you).

There are dozens of those types of tests out there, and they're mostly a measure of people's ability to grasp non-standard communications. They're very valuable in determining if a person has the onset of dementia or Alzheimer's disease. In these of instances, sentence structure is what's the determining value.

What rules language usage is what society determines to be the "rules".

Language, like all animals, evolves over time. Most folks wouldn't completely understand the rules of 15th Century English grammar. In fact, the rules of grammar have evolved a great deal in the past 60, or so, years.

In English, spelling as well as meaning changes with location. It is one of a few 'living languages' able to create new words rather than add a 'foreign' word instead.

In the UK both spelling and legible handwriting became less important in school education as the looney left took over the Education System. Another 'inovation' was 'the supply teacher' that filled in occasionally. This often meant that homework was never marked as tutors changed almost weekly.

Junior School &University is probably the only places where spelling mistakes lower's grades.

Then there is the 'Spell checker'.........it has made most people lazy.

If you want to understand how badly english can be treated read UK Government letters and reports! They have the cheek to add a footnote telling us that "this is available in other languages and formats".....Plain English would be a better start!

Yes there are probably mistakes in this.....I do not write a great deal anymore. I cannot find the flaming spell checker on UHH.

Have fum

I'll bet people who learned sight reading will have problems.

Hey, dyslexia is not something to make fun of. I have a form of dyslexia, yes, there is many kinds of dyslexia. The one I have is brain part that decord the sound of letters I do not have. So how can I read, since sound of letters is no use to me. I memorize the whole word, read around the word. Also by listening to people talking. I can speak and understand at college lever, But to spell something, second grade lever. All those years- grade school, high school, college no one could put two and two together. It was until I working in a office a fellow co-work put it all together, The damage was done, she explain why. Any one reading this has a young child that show this kind of dyslexia, get help now! If you have kick ass do it! This kind of dyslexia dictate my life. Don't let your child have to live that way.

When I see a thread/post with spelling errors I automatically discount anything the individual says. Sort of like Nigerian SPAM e-mails I receive with obvious spelling errors and terrible grammar!

I believe no one is making fun of dyslexia. More directed at people who don't learn, don't care to learn, don't think it is important to learn. Medical anomalies excepted. Even though some of the side effects may be similar.
