Gene,

I agree completely with your statement of "Photoshop and Lightroom are considerably better since CC was introduced. And it is much cheaper to buy initially, the last CS6 extended version was $1000, and Lightroom 6 was $150. To date I have only spent a fraction of that over the past 3 yrs - like $360. I call that a win for me. "

Bill

There's another important detail that most people seem to have missed. If you bought the Standalone program of Photoshop and Lightroom, within two to three years or so there would be an upgrade which you would have to pay for. My guess over let's say a 10 year period If you added up the cost of installing the most up-to-date current standalone versions of both packages, I'm guessing you would find that the Creative Cloud will only cost you a small fraction of that over a 10 year period. They're not giving the stuff away. They save a lots of money not having to mail packages out and write them to disks and print manuals. And they more than make up for the lower cost with the much larger volume of end users. Of course, not everybody cares about the most up-to-date features and camera support, but the fact that the Creative Cloud is always up-to-date shows how cost-effective it really is.

Pretty soon, we'll be paying subscription fees for just about everything. On1 is offering On1 Plus. For $50 annually, you get the program, videos, Loyalty Rewards, etc. I already get the Loyalty Rewards, but I guess I'll have to start paying if I want to continue getting them.

The "Plus" program is yearly but there isn't a subscription to use the software. If you are in the "Plus Pro" program you get access to all of their courses and "Plus Rewards" and in it, you get the new version when it comes out as part of the deal. You never have to buy the next version or the "Plus" if you don't want to, and if you don't, the software you bought will continue to work whether you buy the new one or not.

Jerry, I bought Affinity Photo a couple of months ago at a reasonable $40. It is now my main editor. It has everything I need and more. There are plenty of on-line tutorials for anyone who wants to learn how to operate it.
I am very happy with it.

Yes, I like Affinity, although I haven't used it very much. I'm tempted to get Luminar, but how many do I need?

Jerry,

You need them all to be a good citizen on UHH. If you only use one, you may be accused of, and guilty of, being a narrow minded fanboy with limited knowledge!

Wow! I almost forgot about that. You should have sent that to me in a private message. I'll cancel my plans for today and go online and buy everything. I don't want people to think that I'm a photo snob.

Yes, but what is the PP software equivalent of Leica or Billingham?

Instead of that, spend the day getting better at whatever your favorite is. Stay narrow minded. Being a photo software snob with focus on a single app may have the potential of improving photographic results!

You're not preaching that old quality vs quantity line are you?

"Stay narrow minded." ??? I'm anything but. I have forty ukuleles, but I'm not a good player. I just like the looks and the variety of what I have.

"Preaching"? If invited to get on my soapbox to preach, I will (and do) say to get over the subscription thing and learn the Lightroom/Photoshop combination. If allowed to go on, I will preach to add Premiere Elements for the third leg of the stool. It does video, but also picks up where the Slideshow module stops and allows better shows with higher resolution.

Sermon over.

Hiring a professional retoucher to go over your images. Best if the retoucher is a live-in.

Best if s/he can cook as well...

Hey my wife did that! But boy, did she overestimate my post processing skills. Good thing she likes my cooking.

I no longer use ON1

Your loss. On1 2018.5 Raw is an awesome piece of software - and if they keep adding improvements and functionality it will likely become the first full-featured replacement for the Photoshop/Lightroom Combo.

why are you so opposed to paying for software and it's maintenance? Too bad your desire to save a few pennies is guiding your choice of software . . . Just sayin'

So right. Screw those dirty filthy profit grubbers. Boycott their products. I wonder what the profit ratio is needed for your company to pay for your salary their matching contributions to your Social Security and your Medicare accounts are?

That "Employer Contribution" is money that could be paid to the employee if it didn't go to the black hole of government. If you are self-employed, that "contribution" is paid by you anyway. So, I don't see any real advantage for the employee. You sound like a disgruntled employer that hates the very idea of sharing the profits with the lowly worker bees.

Quicken, too. I'll keep using my 2014 version until it doesn't work anymore. I've been using Quicken since 1987. I find it very handy for looking up when I bought something, how much it cost, model number, etc.

Same here but I have the 2017 version in Parallel/Windows on my iMAC. tried the OSX version but it is different from the Windows version.
