I was at a local Chrysler dealer and they had this parked in the showroom. You older drag race fans may recognize it. 426 cu. in., 800 hp hemi. It has two 4 barrel carbs on what was call a ram log manifold. It was a marvel in it's day.

I only had my cell. I may try to go back with my camera. By the way, this dealer also had a Challenger Hellcat in the showroom too.

Freaking awesome. Looks fast just sitting there. Too bad you didn't get a pic of the engine. Maybe if you go back with your DSLR you can ask them to raise the hood.

The hood is held down by 8 screw down connections. I asked about opening the hood. No go

They had to drag me away. Something about the floor was getting slippery from the drool.

I remember this car. Sox and Martin we're a power house in their day.

I remember seeing this run at local strip, along with Hemi under Glass and Tennessee Snow Bird. Also the jet car that was so fast it could only pulse the jet for a very short burn. Fun times.

For those in the Midwest, Labor Day weekend is coming -- the US Nationals are at what was known at Indianapolis Raceway Park. I assume the schedule hasn't changed much in recent years so the Hemi Shootout is still on Friday. These are Darts, Challengers, Cudas from the late 60s and early 70s. Around 20 or so show up and round 1 begins early in the day, typical drag race eliminations. Finals around 4 or so. These look stock, like the Sox and Martin car here. They run in the 150s at 9 or 10 seconds. It's fun, if you have any interest. And, if they're not busy, you can go up to and chat with the cars' team members, and get all the pictures you want. Drag racing is very very fan friendly.

This is the Cuda body that I liked best of all. In fact, I'd give my left nut to have this. A friend of mine had an orange one with a 4 speed and he put an automatic in it. He kept the old tranny which was fine so it could go back to stock. He freshened up the engine and had it blue printed and degreed the cam along with balancing everything. I was there for most of the work since another friend did all the work. This car was so awesome I was slipping on my drool. Unfortunately, the guy that owned it was a total alcoholic that didn't deserve to own such a nice ride and I lost touch with the douchebag. I don't know what happened to the Hemi Cuda but I heard that he died a few years after I last saw him.

I guess I wasn't in his will.

More dealerships should be doing that, putting an old mussel car on display. If nothing else it might bring more customers into the showroom.

I was there in 1967 when Don Gartlitts dipped into the 6 second mark on the last race of the day, to decide Top Fuel. He had promised to shave off his beard, that he had vowed to keep until he got into the 6s. True to his word, he arrived back at the start line and proceeded to shave it off. However, due to it being a dry shave, he couldn't do it. He said " Sorry, I just can't do it and will finish shaving later". I had a friend sitting on my shoulders, who filmed the attempt. We were within 4 or 5 feet of him. We knew Don as he had raced at our local strip at Kohler/Cayuga, Ontario, Canada dragstrip and we were part time workers there. A little more trivia. We pitched our tent at the Drive-In Theatre across from the dragstrip, the cost was regular admission, per person, per night to stay there. Wow! 51 years ago!

Nationals used to be crazy fun, bed races in the campgrounds, all kinds of goofy stuff. Now we're old and mature. Phooey.

I didn't have the Hemi, but I had a 1967 Barracuda...the first year of that body style. It was white with a red interior and had factory air. I bought it brand new for 2750.00 and drove it for seven years and 110,000 miles. It was the absolute best looking car I have ever owned. In hindsight (20-20) I will always regret selling it. I got $600.00 which went toward my next car. Today, that car in primo condition would run 20-30K. Whenever I see one at a car show...which is rare unless it is a MOPAR show, I mentally kick myself.

The reason they wouldn't open the hood is that this is a copy. Not one of the original dragsters that has ever been on the strip. If you had looked underneath, you would have seen that it's not the real deal. The dragster suspension is missing.

I remember that. Now the Pro Stocks are running mid 6's and over 210 mph, naturally aspirated and on gasoline.
