I have full frame and crop bodies. Want to keep it small enough to travel and tour with easily.

Up to now, I have carried a photo backpack with 2 Full Frame bodies mounted with a 24-70 (L) and 70-200 (L), and a 50mm 1.2 (L), filters, no flash, no tripod, extra batteries, etc. My focus that even if on vacation, I'm still capturing "keepers" for publishing.
But, that's a lot of weight and $$$value.
Recently, I've been rethinking things. Perhaps a more compact APS-C sensor camera with top quality glass would be easier to "schlep" and be up to standard.
I think much depends on the toss up between compromising image quality vs portability that for each person, is unique.

In April 2017 I went on a Viking River Cruise to the Netherlands and Belgium. After I returned home I inventoried all of my photos (and I took a lot). 90% were in the 24-70 range. This year I’m headed on another Viking River Cruise, this time to Switzerland, Germany, and France. I plan taking my Nikon D750, a Tamron 24-70 G2, a Tamron 70-200 G2, and a Nikon 20mm 1.8G. All are great in low light. The 70-200 will stay onboard for longer shots. I’ll take the 24-70 and 20mm on tours. The 20mm is excellent for shots in churches, etc.

One body, one lens.... why complicate things with trying to turn a vacation into a photo shoot ? Olympus body of choice ( M2 preferable ) and 12-100 zoom lens. KISS principle. If you need more than this then hire a porter and bring your whole collection....

The Canon EOS40D with a 28/135 lens had dome a great job.
Later replaced the 40D with a 70D same lens. Great pictures.

Watch out for pickpockets, while in Metz we were approached by a man asking for change of a €2 coin, while looking for change I noticed a gold chain hanging from his hand ,I looked at my wrist to discover my bracelet was gone,I never felt him take it ,he was very good,I snatched the chain back from his hand and he rang off before I could belt him,I got my chain back ,plus I still had his €2 coin .

Unless you don't mind making everyone else in your group stand and wait for you, leave the tripod home. Besides, lots of museums won't let your tripod inside.

Did you find that a tripod was a good idea for the excursions? I love my VR lenses but I sure ain't as steady as I once was.

Good anti-pickpocket defense, lets you relax, enjoy your travels, and take great pics.

Concur with monopod. I do a lot of, cruising and have found the monopod useful on an off the ship. Using a Canon 5DMk4, I like a 50 mm prime for interiors and walking around, and the 70-200 mm EF in IS for more reach from photos made u/w on the ship. A 28-105 mm IS is also good for walking around. More gear, but you only unpack once on a cruise, and these options give you more flexibility.

We did the Amsterdam to Budapest cruise and loved it! I took my then Nikon D-800 with the 28-300 mm zoom and the 16-35 mm wide angle zoom. I found I needed the range of the 28-300 to get any meaningful pictures from the boat and the wide angle for shore excursions. I always throw in a 50mm prime just in case something breaks. I was very pleased at the end of the trip with my selection.

Me too; same combo. Might sneak in my 1.4 50.

That or the 1.2 50 mm prime is precisely what I had in mind. On a walk around day, stick it in your pocket for a dark interior or whatever. P.S. I can wear the same flight jacket patches.

Would have liked to see some, Scotty. I'm going this Fall. Taking roughly the same lenses.

We went from Amsterdam to Budapest. I used a Canon 20D with a 18-270 lense. You won't need a tripod or monopod. The 270 is great for photographing castles when going down the river.

I'm going to be taking a river cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam, then some various cities, and finishing with a cruise from Lisbon to St Maarten. For ease of travel and taking pictures, I'll use a bridge camera, Canon SX50, that allows me to shot manual. The BAD news is that it is limited to 12 MP. I must confess the new Nikon P1000 really interests me, but the minister of finance said to choose between the new P1000 and the new Samsung Galaxy Tab S4. SIGH!
