Just wondering, why you were thinking of this vs the 200 -500mm f/5.6? Thx!

I am considering getting this lens for shooting wildlife and would love to hear from anyone who has used it. Can you please give me your opinion? Thanks very much. Also, is this the newest version of this lens?
It's not bad. I borrowed one from Nikon when it first came out. I found it to be a far cry from my 600mmF4 and my Sigma 100-300F4. So I did not buy one.
The 200-500 is both sharper and cheaper. If you are thinking of using the 80-400 with a teleconverter - don't.
The Sigma 150-600 Sport and the Tamron 150-600 G2 are both even a little sharper and feature decent dust and moisture sealing - and both are cheaper than the 80-400. I've borrowed/used all of these lenses and found the 80-400 the least desirable of the 4.
You might want to take a look at this review (for all intents and purposes the G2 is the equivalent of the Sigma Sport - at least as far as sharpness is concerned)
https://photographylife.com/reviews/nikon-200-500mm-f5-6e-vrI ended up with the Sigma Sport, because I bought it before the G2 was available. I've since borrowed the G2 and love it's image quality and lighter weight.
You can look at my stuff here:

I love this lens if there is good light. I am purely an amateur but have lucked out getting some decent shots with this lens as long as the sun is shining. I have gotten very frustrated in shooting under cloudy conditions and that is probably me, not the lens. I am still learning. I do not find the weight of the lens to be an issue at all. I shoot almost exclusively wildlife and do a lot of shooting from the car which acts as my blind. I use it on my Nikon D610. I haven't used a teleconverter on it but would be curious to know if others have and what results they have gotten. I will send a link of some foxes that I shot through a double-paned sliding glass door recently that turned out pretty well.
