Tried creating a slide show with photoshop elements 14. Worked, except I haven't found where I have much choice in format or music. The file is in MP4 and my computer will play it off the DVD, but my DVD player says error disk. Remade it and got the same thing. Any ideas? I know I'm probably missing something.
Proshow Gold by Photodex...for
Versatility
Breadth of function
Excellent Support
Time line control for video, slides and Audio (music tracks, narration, etc)
Excellent support
Huge library of transitions
Individual and Global timing of pics, video, audio.
Excellent Support
Extreme User control
Did I say Excellent Support (Telephone and Other)
Relatively speaking, Elements is a POS in this area!
Not Free, but worth what it costs without a doubt on my part.
Not familiar but did you allow it to "close out" at end so would universally play in DVD players, otherwise it may be only sync to your computer. Anyway, that is how many programs work.
And BTW, PowerPoint Director will do everything ProShow Gold will and more for 25% of the cost.

I use Pro Show Gold from photodex.com, it's excellent. Their website has lots of sample and tutorials and you can download a trial version. It's about $80 and well worth it for ease of use and versatility. I too have Element 14 and find its slide sow module useless.
Most here use and recommend ProShow.
I use and like Premiere Elements. It give lots of music choices.
The disk error may be the result of the type of DVD disc itself.

Did you use DVD Mastering software? DVDs can be genuine DVD Video discs or DVD Data discs. If you burned a data disc, it will error out in a standard DVD player.
DVD Video discs have separate folders for audio and video (AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS). But to make them, you need special software like Apple iDVD, on Macs, or some equivalent utility on Windows.
Here's an idea: Use a VIDEO EDITING program to create your slide show. You will have many more choices of options, including titling, mixing stills with video, editing multiple audio tracks, using the "Ken Burns Effect" of panning and zooming through stills, etc.
For over 15 years, I have used iMovie and now Final Cut Pro X to make "slide shows". It takes time and finesse, but the results are worth it. And if someone needs a copy, you can master and burn a DVD or give them a flash drive or upload it to YouTube.
Whatever you do, don't steal copyrighted music! It is intellectual property. Google 'Production Music' and you'll find plenty of libraries of downloadable music suitable for shows. If you must use a popular song, get in touch with the record company and inquire about the procedure.

The OP wrote it was an MP4 on a DVD disk.

The OP said it played. I don't have any DVD players anymore and it has been a long time since I tried it. But, I recall that my Blu-Ray players do OK with an MP4 on a disk. For now my choice is to put MP4s on thumb drives directly into the TV or use the "smart tv app" to watch MP4s I put on Vimeo.

Neither of my stand-alone DVD players will play anything but CDs, MP3s, and standard Video DVDs. My smart tvs do handle flash drives, but I plug a 128GB flash drive into my Netgear router and share it via WiFi. We can watch on our phones, tablet, or the smart tvs that way. And we also share from apps on our phones and my wife's iPad.
The downside of a standard DVD is the 720x480 resolution. Most TVs can handle either 720P or 1080P from a flash drive or a networked media source.
Nearly all of my video is originally recorded in .MOV format on the GH4. My TVs can play either .MOV or .MP4. But I tend to convert to .MP4 in HandBrake, simply because I create an original master at full quality that is too big for practical use. HandBrake is open source. If you don't have it, download it. It's golden!

I've had MS Office since it came out years ago so when someone says "Slide Show" all I think of is PowerPoint. It does any and all things mentioned. Words, photos, videos, timing, music and will generate files in many different formats and also a file that can play without the need for PowerPoint on the PC playing the show.
Best of all it came with MS Office.

It appears a number of members, at least the ones who posted, use ProShow Gold and seem happy about it. I used to use ProShow Gold then upgraded to Producer and very happy about, too.
When recording DVD regular or Blu ray using ProShow, you have to check the box which says "Executable" when creating the menu. If you don't, you won't be able to play it in any DVD machine. I encountered this problem a number of times when I was new to the program. FYI, I seldom make copy using the regular DVD unless a family or friend request a copy and only has the regular DVD machine. The difference in image quality is like night and day.
FWIW, I hate keeping stacks of Blu ray disks and the cost is still expensive. So, now I just make copies of slide shows or movies directly to USB flash drive or WD portable storage. I see just a little difference between the blu ray copy and WD/USB flash drive regarding image quality. The old blu ray disks I own have been transferred them to 4 TB WD storage without noticeable degradation in image quality. I use DVDFab blu ray capable software to do this chore.
The other problem that I used to encounter was when I would play it in my old DVD Blu ray machine, I would encounter the same message, "disk error." I bought a new machine and it worked. I assume the old machine was not "digitally calibrated" to play it.
Sorry, I don't use photshop elements to create slideshow so can't comment on this.
God luck.
