So far, it sounds as if all of you like the SB-600 flash, and that is good enough for me. Of course, I have done my own research on it as well. The going rate appears to be around $100 for ones in nice condition. I intend to pull the trigger on the purchase of one within the next few days, but wanted to confirm my choice based upon the opinions of those on here who've used one.

Thanks for your input!

Bought my SB-600 new from Cameta years ago. Great flash and still use it. It did not come with any filters, but I bought a Lumiquest set of filters for when I need these tools. Works fine and very affordable

Good solid, compact, reliable, spunky flash. One of Nikon's best. Never use color gels because I know Photoshop.

I use the SB-600 & 800. Both units work well with the Nikon gels. They slide into the unit and are held in place by the diffuser panel. That is how I made this image. Portra 400 film.

1.) I'm thinking about getting a Nikon SB-600 Speedlight to use with my Nikon D3s.
What is your opinion of this flash?

2.) Most of the ones I have found (all used) do not come with the color filter set (Nikon SJ-1) which was included originally. To those of you who have the SB-600, do you use the (SJ-1) color filter set which came with it?

Thanks

I think you can pay more (like Nikon) but not get better than the Godox tt350 or any one of the Godox family.

I have it along with a 910. I use it more than the 910, because it is compact and is usually all I need. For more power, it's the 910, but I do not use the filters with either one.

I personally like the Metz flashes better than the Nikon ones. Higher quality at a slightly lower price - Full TTL and HSS compatibility

It may or may not interest you, but the SB600 and SB800 speedlights are unique in that they support iTTL, TTL and DTTL modes. In practical terms, these speedlights support a very wide range of Nikon camera bodies from film through to Nikon’s current DSLR models.

Nikon ceased this broad support with the SB700 and onward models, which support iTTL only; ie the SB700 onwards are not backwards compatible.

I still use a SB600. It didn’t come with gels (the SB-R200 speedlights do). The SB600 is still going strong and I don’t feel the least bit inclined to upgrade it.

Even with two 'Hogs preferring other brands, not one person with anything against the SB-600, and quite a few that like it a lot. . .

I bought my SB-600 eight years ago for my D5000 and kept it on for my D7100. Excellent flash but it did not come with filters.

You want the Nikon SJ-1 filter pack. They are designed for the SB-600 & 800.

I paid the going price for my first one in 2007 but got my 2nd one for $35 (used of course)...That said, I still have lots of older film era flashes that I can utilize with triggers off camera...
