It has been said before and I repeat it. On UHH you get:
(1) Expert Opinions
(2) Strong conflicting opinions
(3) Completely wrong answers

They are not in equal proportions and, unfortunately, it's up to the reader to sort the wheat from the chaff.

You forgot biased opinions.

Very nicely articulated, Andy. I concur and admit that I get sucked into the vortex of snarkiness from time to time. For the most part I try to keep my nose clean and my irritated thoughts and knee jerk reactions to myself.

Since I've gotten active on UHH, I've noticed a particular thing. There are a lot of ill-informed, poorly written, or borderline offensive posts asking questions that might be trolling, might be naïve, or might just be offensive by their apparent greed and unconcern for others.

As in any public forum, these attract their share of unsupported opinion, of irrelevant and sometimes silly responses (see any Nickanon or PP thread), and sometimes outright derision for the opening thesis.

But one thing I've noticed is that there are a number of people on UHH who respond sincerely, who offer opinionated but not dismissive advice, and who give their legitimate thoughts on the most outrageous of questions and theses. You can ask, "Is the Nikon Dxxx or Canon Dsxx really a piece of overpriced crap compared to the "Nonamekon?" and you'll get some sincere and honest responses, from people who are knowledgeable, and offer fifty percent "what" and fifty percent "why" when they post.

So here's to you folks - the ones who treat everyone assuming their sincerity, offer well-informed advice, and recognize that the "right answer" for one person is not necessarily the right one for another. It isn't easy - at times, there seem to be more stupid or deliberately provocative questions than there are sincere but ill-informed ones.

You folks are the gold in the ore of UHH posts, the polished gemstones among the druse, the reason I keep coming back here for both information and for the occasional tidbit of information or experience I can contribute. I'm trying every day to be more like you, and less cynical, snarky, or confrontational.

So here's to you. I'm not going to call out names, but I hope you know who you are, and know that so many people who populate this place appreciate your contributions. I have at least a half dozen regulars with high post counts in my mind, but no doubt, there are many others I haven't yet noticed. I wish I had your patience, knowledge, and ability to articulate them.

Here's to you!

I've seen those too, and I agree that it is often a complete waste of time to get caught up in them. I guess that's why the "crazy ones" are crazy to respond, but they do. And I just wanted to show my appreciation for them - I've actually learned some things myself in a couple of these drama threads, even when the OP either wasn't well informed enough to phrase the question, or was just throwing out chum to be pounced upon.

Some of the folks here who take the time to answer, who come from an informed perspective, and who offer a balanced approach in providing options are helping others who read the threads, and that's what I wanted to acknowledge.

The person who asks, "What's the best way to dispose of a body?" may be just tossing out troll food, but the rest of us may well learn something about lime, soil composition, and duct tape decay rates.

Thank you for an interesting post. After being here a few years I have a few people that I have seen to be helpful in their posts. I may not always agree with them, but never disagree with the intentions. Others I rate a lot lower, and usually dismiss.
So once again thank you.👍

In my mind, it's always been a shout out to those who defy conventional expectations of normal behavior. Normal behavior on message boards is all too often snarky, reactive, and based on expectations of the motives and intentions of others.

The relatively few who defy this, who take things sincerely, and offer their best advice, without being either overly prescriptive or proscriptive, are outside the norm, at least in my opinion. Surf a few threads that begin with seemingly trollish or silly questions and you'll see exactly what I mean. There are a few of my fellow netizens who defy expectations and invariably offer good, balanced advice. That's not easy, and those are the people I'm referring to here.

You guys and gals make UHH the valuable resource that it is. You don't seem to expect special reward or acknowledgement, but just keep on doing what you do, regardless of positive or negative feedback. That's rare on Internet forums of any kind (trust me - I participate in many in my particular hobby or political interest groups...), and you deserve a very special shout out. I do hope that you're among the sixty something people that have read this thread so far. You make UHH the valuable resource that it is...

Nice post--thanks. It's always helpful to take some time to think about what we'd like to accomplish and how we'd like to inform ourselves on a forum like this and these issues are critical.

I hate it when I waste my time on a post that has nothing to say, so I ask myself if I really have something new and useful to add to the conversation before posting. Sometimes I erase a long-winded statement before hitting 'send'. When I do there is usually someone else who will say it better and more succinct than I.

I agree with you and that said by markngolf (and others on this thread) and feel your post too. I always read and respond where I feel (I might be) relevant. Have made the mistake of being drawn into the stuff of trolls a couple times, but like my little rattler friend says "Don't tread on me" and I won't bite, I'll just cruise off on another adventure. Tis a great forum, and have learned a lot of useful/current/tried and true/honest/sincere information/data/experiences shared and just keep coming back for more (usually with my morning coffee). Sometimes I'm outside an hour or two later trying something I've read, or try to emulate a style, or some such. 99.9% of the time consider folks I meet (in any scenario) to be a friend until they prove themselves otherwise. Here's to you and those of similar passion & compassion - Cheers, and "Keep on Keepin on" !!!

I have gotten SO much help from folks on this site. I try to ignore unkind, irrelevant and even demeaning remarks.

All in all, I enjoy this site and look here for answers I can’t get elsewhere. Sometimes, you need to hear someone’s EXPERIENCE with whatever your question is about. Then, it is easier to make a decision or fix a problem.

Thank you for posting, Andy

Great post Andy, very true. There are quite a few users on here that I always hope will reply to many of the questions posted on here, because as you said, they always respond with sincerity, good advice based on their knowledge and experience, and they articulate their response in a way that people can and should find helpful and get the answers to the questions they asked.

On any forum of this nature, be it photography or any other subject, you are always going to get those with snarky, rude, obnoxious, opinionated, and ill informed comments. And unfortunately, its just the nature of the beast so to speak.

Very excellent post. I truly appreciate everyone who has helped me out and viewed my maybe not-so-great shots, given me advice or a simple smiley. I don't give out much advice since I'm not yet qualified to do so. But I've learned so much from this site. Thanks to all. And thanks, Andy, for appreciating other's opinions and learning from them. And helping us to appreciate them, also.
