Not a bad choice for lenses. Whales usually need something longer but with the 850 you can pretty much crop later as much as you want. I do photo tours out of Juneau. Between the bus, the boat and the trail there is really no place for tripods.

I am a Nikon D850 user and a landscape photographer. My question is has anyone taken this trip? If so, which lenses did you bring? Tripod? I am considering my 24-70 and 70-200, and filters. Were there any areas that just stayed with you that you would want to go back and shoot again? This cruise and rail takes the passengers from Vancouver to Fairbanks. Final question did you spend more time on the port or starboard side of the ship when photographing? Thanks in advance for your input.

Your whale watch and Mendenhall Glacier was in Juneau. Anchorage has been trying to steal the capital from Juneau for years but they can't have our glacier.

I have taken this trip twice. The 2nd time we booked a balcony room and loved it. Pictures were taken were a Sigma 28-300 and turned out beautiful
In Vancouver take a side trip to China Town, Queen Elizabeth gardens, And Stanley Park
On embarkation if from Vancouver take a pic as you pass the bridge in Stanley park heading out to sea as well as the sunsets
In Anchorage take in Mendenhall Glacier and a whale watch your. Did not regret it
In Ketchikan Totem Pole Village was interesting
In Skagway the train trip afforded many photo opportunities
The trip through the glacier area and watching the calving process afforded many shots
The train ride ide is excellent but take the shots at the end of the car you are in.... better shots. Some good chances for getting the train rounding a few bends also Poor shots in the domed cars The best memories I have are the shots when leaving Denali .... need to be ready for about the first 1/2 hour? or you may miss some good ones. Some good chances also on the school bus in Denali.... hope for clear days to shoot the mountain.
I only used the single lens and did not regret taking others.
I hope this gives you some things to think about as it it a trip of a lifetime
First and foremost.... enjoy yourself
I have taken this trip twice. The 2nd time we book... (show quote)

You can't see the aurora this time of year unless you are really, really lucky and up at about 1:30 in the morning. It doesn't get dark this time of year.

Photographers sure are different, aren't they? Took the trip a couple years back. Big country for me equals wide angle lens for the "Grand Scenic" shots and long teles for the wildlife (although the bears I saw were less than 100 feet away). Where Billnikon "never takes a tripod", I always take and use a tripod. If the auroras are out, you'll probably wish you did, too. Yes, I'd recommend taking the 28-300mm. Lot of shots from that one lens. On the boat, I mostly hung-out at the bow for glacier shots, but you've got legs. Use them. The boat ain't all THAT big. Mostly enjoy yourself. Remember, Alaskan weather "ain't no picnic." Unless you are Blacks2, you'll see less sun than clouds.

Have a great trip! I took a 24-70 and a 70-300. I didn’t need and thing else. Take rain gear for you and your camera and forget about tripod and monopod. There is so much light you won’t have any problem with taking any picture.

We took the same trip 10 years ago on Princess. I had a D200 that I used the whole trip. If you have a super wide lens I'd take it for the scenery is spectacular. The other lens I used was an 80 - 400. This was the lens I used on all shore excursions. Got some great wildlife photos but sometimes I wished I had something longer. As for a tripod or a monopod, I never used one, except when I had time to walk around the towns we were stopped at. Then a monopod was great. Vibrations on the ship and movement on the train made it almost impossible. The side or field trips are fabulous and you'll get many great shots.

Have a great trip--know we did.

I concur: the 24-70 and then something longer than the 70-200 if you have it. When I wander around the state, I prefer to carry a 24-70 and a 100-400, and never mind the gap in coverage. I'd carry longer if I had it.

I've not done the cruise, but I live in Fairbanks and have been out to Denali National Park many times: a longer lens is a must.

What time of year are you coming up?

In that case: bring a tripod. You will be in Fairbanks at the beginning of aurora season, and you will need the extra support to adequately capture that if you get to see it. Your 24-70 is just barely wide enough to capture that, even on a crop sensor, so that lens will stand you in good stead for the trip.

We aren't New England, but you'll get some good colors in Denali National Park at that time of year.

At a guess, you are probably signed up for either the Denali Natural History Tour (DNHT) or the Tundra Wilderness Tour (TWT). If not, you should check those out. By preference, I'd recommend the TWT over the DNHT: it's longer, and goes deeper into the park. If you're signed up for the DNHT and can upgrade to the TWT, do so.

Have fun. The fall is my favorite time of year, and is an excellent season for photography.

True that. The OP told iosa that he will be there thru the first week of Sept. I was there in mid-Sept and the auroras were out. I got shots.

I took that Princess cruise a year ago from Vancouver to Fairbanks.

My favorite was a whale excursion we took at Juneau. It was fantastic. Even though it was a rather large boat, if you are willing to stand on the top deck, you can run back and forth to each side. We saw a lot of Orcas and a few humpbacks. If you set you camera for slow repeat shots, start shooting when you think the water is being disturbed and follow through while the whale is visible.

I also took the train up the White River (I believe) over to Canada following the original miner's trail. I was fortunate to get in the back rail car. I could stand at the very back outside the car and shoot either side of the railroad. I could also shoot what we were just passing.

I hope you have a room with a balcony. The day in Glacier Bay is good whichever side of the ship you are on and you can get great pics from either side.

I would encourage you to take the longer (7 hours I believe) bus tour into Denali if you hope to see wildlife.

I had a Nikion D7200 crop camera with a 18-140 lens. It was very good for most of the trip.

Enjoy!

I’m trying to determine if I responded to your posting a couple of days ago. I was rereading everything that was written. I just wanted to thank you again for your thorough reply. Very helpful.

We're going on Holland America the week of September 8th. This website shows the Aurora Forecast for Alaska:

Have a great trip!
