My wife and I will be going to Asheville in mid July. We want to take some day trip so what are your suggestions. I'd like to photograph some waterfalls but would also like to explore the area.
Any and all suggestions appreciated.
Thanks

Here's a link to just about ANYTHING you'd want relating to waterfalls around Asheville. One that isn't on the list and is close-by near Old Fort, is Catawba River Falls. About 1.5 miles in and 1.5 out hike. Well worth it. Here's an example...... Be prepared to go early or late to avoid the tourist crush at almost all the waterfalls....

Everyone goes to the Biltmore and plan to spend a full day if possible. However, I was also very impressed with the Grove Park Inn. This historical hotel has been visited by many of our Presidents, was built during the depression (I think by the CCC), and it's construction is impressive to say the least. As for the Biltmore, I still find it hard to believe that any one person ever had that kind of money! It's also beautiful country and has a thriving artists community downtown, so it should be a good trip with lots of photo ops.
Take a ride up the Blue Ridge parkway. Very beautiful

We like to go there a couple times a year. We take a loop south from Asheville to Brevard (white squirrels), then out on 64 (waterfalls), Cashiers, Franklin, Bryson City (Great Smoky Mtn Railways), Cherokee (nice Indian museum and a casino), then maybe Maggie Valley, we think Waynesville is a neat town, then back to Asheville. Loop is more than a day trip, but just the north or south legs could be. Most waterfalls are a moderate hike, but a couple (Dry Falls !!) are right next to the road.

Downtown Asheville is full of life and buzzing with excitement. There are art galleries, museums, shopping, and enormous opportunity for people watching. Of course, plenty of mountains to explore, and so much more. You'll probably find loads of brochures in coffee shops, hotels, etc. Have fun!

The Biltmore Estate, and if you're a veteran they will give you and youe wife a discount on the admission. Well worth the price. Awesome photo ops.

If you like Vanderbilt estates, visit his sisters estate in Vermont. It is Shelburne Farms. It is now a Not For Profit Organization. The mansion is a 24 room inn.Great place for Breakfast and Dinner. Guest Rooms are not air conditioned. Great hiking trails and wagon tour of the estate.

I live near Asheville and all of the above tips are great. If you are looking for something a bit more industrial-chic try the River Arts district. Lots of colorful old buildings, railroad and river photo opportunities.
I would recommend Mt. Mitchell. It can be reached by a drive to a parking lot near the top.
I also like to visit the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild-Milepost 382 Blue Ridge Parkway
Asheville, NC 28805. 828-523-4110.
If you like Mexican food, there is a great restaurant in Biltmore Village called The Cantina. (They have great margaritas!)
Whatever you do, enjoy yourselves!

"It's Deja vu all over again." I thought that you got a lot of good suggestions yesterday. Just how long a trip are you planning?
