I think a great starter camera would be a Nikon D7000. It will be something you would hang on to for a long time while you grow into it as you learn. If money is an issue, buy used or look for refurbished.

Thank you guys for all of your input. One of my friends also has reccommended the Nikon D3100. Has anyone here used that before? I'm thinking this might be the one I go with unless there are any good reasons not to.
