I would suggest you and your friend take 10 pictures of the same subjects, then swap cameras and take the same 10 pictures with the other person's camera and compare results.

I have been using Canon D5 IV for years with L lenses. I am finding that often my photos are not as sharp as they should be. My friend has the equivalent Nikon camera with equivalent lenses. His photos seem to be much sharper than mine. Does anyone have any similar experiences.

Seriously? Which is better, a Chevy or a Ford? I think it may be the person behind the camera. You or your friend? Sorry, but I think that’s the truth.

The title of your thread seems to be what's upset some of the people responding. This is no excuse for the odd rude comment though. It could actually be that your camera has an issue which needs addressing. Is it only recently that you've noticed this? It would be worth swapping cameras with your friend for a shoot, let them set it up as they wish, you do the same with their gear and take it from there. Before doing any of this, upload some examples which we can see, click store original so we get the full res version with exif.

I have 5D lll and 5D4 as well as Nikon D810 cameras. My Canon lenses are usually better quality, mostly L series. I have to use a little unsharp mask in Photoshop to get the Canon shots as sharp as the Nikons. No big deal! There isn't an anti-aliasing filter on the Nikons so they tend to be sharper for that reason only. There are settings in the menus for sharpening if you shoot jpegs. There is a definite difference. I shoot a lot!!!

Too many variables - my friend had a Canon that was not getting great results and could not afford a new camera so he got a Nikon neck strap and improved his results by 50%.

Let us pray that Nikon and Canon merge to stop these silly comparisons.

Although I may not have answered your question that way I would share this thought with you. It's not the arrow, It's the archer. It's difficult to answer your question because knowing your camera, settings, and it's technology may be a variable in producing different results.

This is a moot argument that has gone on for too many years. No one can look at a photograph and tell which brand of camera/lens took the picture because there are too many variables at play.

Good point. Does anyone even know what brand(s) of camera and lenses Edward Weston used. I believe a 11x14" something.

Many people have similar experiences. The fact of the matter is that Nikon makes a better camera than Canon.

I just wanted to throw that in before the onslaught of Nikon vs Canon hordes fill the UHH airwaves with their thoughts.

Truthfully they are both fine cameras. My suggestion would be to go with your friend and shoot the same subjects. Hopefully you can ascertain what it is your friend is doing that you are not. Maybe shoot with the exact same settings, ISO, f stop and shutter speed and similar lenses. I don't think it is the camera but the operator that makes the difference in this case.

EDIT: Here I thought I would get a jump on others and after clicking on Send I find out we are already on page 4 and the hordes have already started. Woe is me.

With respect, you tell us that the Canon lenses are better than the Nikon yet the Nikon gives sharper photos. Am I missing something here. How then are the Canon lenses better?

Yeah! It's the photographer and not the camera because the photographer owns the camera and the camera is his slave so that he can claim the credit which really belongs to the camera.

I'm curious, what's better than the "L" series lenses?

Ummm, the first thing that comes to mind, with tongue firmly in cheek, is Nikon lenses are better than Canon L series lenses.

Have a great day,

Well the 5DIV (no such thing as a D5 IV) has only been out since Sep of 2016 so using it for years is a real trick.
I have one and have no problem with the sharpness when I do my part. I mostly use it with a Tamron 180 macro or my Canon 100-400L mk2 - both with and without 1.4x III extender.

Thank you. I thought the same thing about the OP using the 5DIV for years. I am a Nikon user but didn't think the 5D had been out that long. Could it be he really has a Nikon D5 and he thinks it is a Canon?

What is a great picture. Supper sharp (with shadow depth of field or all in focous) Great color (what is great color).

Are we technicians or photographers (I'm a picture taker) I see contest pictures that get high scores that I would not take free and some lesser score pictures that are great pictures for sale. In discussions we agree that contest pictures and salable may not be the same. So what is it we are trying to do?

I just enjoy my life.
