Note to self: If you don't have the patience to read the thread and see all of the earlier wrong guesses, and that the OP has posted to the answer, you might just be wasting your time posting anything.

I second that comment to use your second card as backup. If you have a camera with capacity for two cards, keep both loaded. I have a 64 GB SD card and a 64 GB CF card. I generally can shoot several hours but a keep another SD card in my wallet, just in case, also an extra battery in my pocket.

Just checked out the image of the Marine. I'm Air Force, so do not know a lot about Marine "rank", but I know enough to know that this guy was one tough dude in his day. Looking at his chevrons I come up with approximately 28 years in the "Service" and if I'm not mistaken (I probably am) he has earned all of the stripes and stars that he can. Then there's that Bronze Star.....Sir, I offer my salute, for a job well done.

Perhaps the write protect tab (lock) on the card was in the wrong position to allow anything to be written to the card. Just a guess based on a bad experience of my own.
Cheers,

Ed

A Rube Goldberg design? Seems like a built-in “accident waiting to happen” and I would assume the demo mode is a convenience for sales staff—and no one else.

And yes, I know the question was answered.

I guess some may have missed the end of the story and answer to my created "mystery." It was fun for me and I hope for others.
I did post the answer on page 3, but I'll repeat it here. It seems a few are still playing.
Thanks for all the replies.

"OK. Most everyone was correct, but not perfect.

About 3 weeks ago, I decided to play safe and record RAW, simultaneously to the two cards, instead of one card. Other UHHers had mentioned this and it seemed like a good precaution against a card failure (not likely - never had one in almost 20 yrs. of digital shooting) but one never knows. Since I will be traveling in August to a life long desire of a River Cruise, I changed the recording configuration. I'm also trying out the new Canon M50. I had inserted one of my cards into its slot and forgot to place it back into the 5D MIII for the morning Memorial Day shoot. It was very careless of me not to notice the warning on the screen indicating no card in the SD slot, but I missed it. I was taking my time, but "screwed up" anyway. Consequently, no images were recorded. I'm very disappointed, but I have forgiven myself.

PS: There was warning on the LCD screen about the lack of a card, but I missed it while concentrating on shooting the action.

Thanks for indulging my silly game.
Mark

Before I shoot any event the first thing I do is reformat my cards and check the security lock on the SD card which is my back up card.

I live in a condo community. Each year, we gather around the Clubhouse Flagpole and have a Memorial Day Flag Ceremony. I am the "unofficial" community photographer. (It means I have more than a smart phone and maybe know a little photography - all donated willingly). I shoot all kinds of community events - images are frequently posted in our quarterly newsletter, posted on a Shutterfly site I created for sharing images with the community and I post a few to our community website (I created it, and I'm the volunteer "Web Administrator". One needs to have to have training and know how to be called a "Webmaster". I fly by the seat of my pants.

So, here's the latest DUH: (Last week I posted another goof - not securely inserting my flash into the hot shoe for a family gathering)
1. The ceremony was scheduled for 8:00 AM.
2. I woke up at 6:00 AM
3. After making coffee, I began to get my cameras (5D MIII & 7D MII) ready for the shoot. Checked settings, batteries, ...
4. Got dressed, ... and went outside to see conditions, played with exposure, white balance ...
5. Decided to use flash on the 5D MIII because it was a very grey, overcast day. Took a few shots and checked them in the viewfinder.
They looked fine on the LCD
6. People began arriving at about 7:45 AM. I took a few more shots for exposure. They looked good on the LCD
7. At 7:50 AM there were about 25 - 30 people gathered.
8. Had them gather around the flagpole and took a few group shots. Looked great on the LCD
9. At 8:00 AM I shot the ceremony of lowering the old flag, raising of the new flag and folding of the old one. I got some excellent shots of the main (WWII Vet dressed in "Blues") and other participants. Moved around to get different perspectives. As I shot, the images looked great on the LCD.
At around 8:30 the gathering dispersed and I went inside, poured a 2nd cup of coffee and went to remove the cards from the 5D MIII.
F----, Ouch, I'm stupid, How could I? No images!!!

OK ya'll. What went wrong? No, I'm not offering prizes for the answer. I'm just trying to forgive myself. This catharsis helps.

Happy Memorial Day. Here is one I did capture two years ago. (please use download)

Thanks so much for this little game. I read the entire post and now I’m going to check my camera to make sure this mistake won’t happen to me.

I have forgotten to put one of the cards back in the camera because it was still in the reader to the computer; but, the camera just recorded to the other card. I don’t remember the setting; but, I do know that I have several choices. I also want to see if I can set the camera to lock if missing card(s).

Thank you for this insight. The picture of the marine you posted is awesome!

Thanks, GrandmaG. Not sure about other cameras, but My Canon DSLR's can be set for:
recording to both cards
separate recording
not to take image unless card (or both) are inserted.
and other settings.
