I am not sure what was going on. I had never had to log in before, then it all changed. I was having similar issues with youtube, where it made me log in before adding a comment, or even hitting 'like' to a video. Something definitely changed. I don't *think* that windows had been upgraded, although it isn't always obvious with win10. I cleared my browsing history - actually couldn't find the option to clear cookies, but I figured that it would be included. Rebooted the PC - something I rarely do - and behaviour was back to normal, both here and with youtube. I do get the messages listed in a different way to before, but I get my subscribed sections and it doesn't force me to login.
